My i5-2400 is getting more then a bit long in the tooth. I have an ATX case (a cheiftech dragon!) but need everything else. It's going to be a family workhorse, so will need to stand up to some gaming at HD resolutions (it's actually going to be connected to the TV). Step son wants to play no mans sky and Ark, Me and Mrs Leblanc need to get our Stardew Valley fix.

So how badly wrong have I got this? Budget is £629ish.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £629.94 (includes delivery: £0.00)

What are the specs of your current PC besides the intel 2400 - which will still run no mans sky (and ark at minimum requirements)?
Only asking because I would've thought it may be better to give your step son your current PC so you/wife can have unfettered access to the new pc and your step son can be kept entertained without being bothered.

I would pick a better psu than that junk. Even the unit that Kitguru tested didn't pass their 80+ bronze tests and since the review Aerocool has changed to even cheaper internals than was in the review unit.

I would also go with a 5700x3d and B550 motherboard although it will work out more expensive.

If you don't need the IGP, then get the 12400F. Since you have a graphics card, I'm assuming that you don't need it.

That is way too expensive for 16GB, you can get 32GB for that. Joxeon has suggested a suitable kit.

These (3050) are really overpriced for what they offer, the RX 6600 is cheaper and some 25% faster.

If you want nvidia, I'd get the 3060 12GB for £249 which is a much better card.

OP, Spend the extra money and get a system that’ll be much faster for gaming.

I’d use your old SSD and chassis to make the budget stretch to the 5700X3D.

An SSD is an SSD and you don’t need some mega fast SSD to enjoy gaming.

Edit. Some notes: I don’t know if that tower cooler is the best bang for the buck as there are alternatives out there but I’m not up to speed on them.

A used AMD 6750XT might level out the budget and give you excellent performance.

I don’t know which PSU to recommend.

+£300 for a GPU (or less)
+£60 to £90 for a PSU
~£800 for a system.
That’s a pretty much the sweet spot price wise and you can definitely knock £100 to £150 off that by shopping around.
