After about two years of looking at Mac's I eventually bit the bullet today and bought myself a bog-basic Mac Mini :)

I have only ever used a Mac in stores and dont have a clue of how to get around it but I am sure ill learn. I am currently reading through the Mac sticky to get an idea of what to do but does anyone have any other useful links or suggestions of what software to get?

Also, do you think I paid a fair price?

Cheers,

Craig :)

Link removed - though the price looks good.

Cheers for the link Billy, just been having a read through :) Sorry about the ebay link, I didnt know they were not allowed! The mini comes tomorrow so ill update this thread once I got everything up and running :)

Cheers,

Craig

Edit: I forgot to ask this earlier but what file system should I use on my external drive so it is readable via my Mac and Windows? Its 500GB so isnt FAT32 out of the question? Cheers

no idea about the mac side of it but you can not format that size in windows it self.. if you use something like partition magic you can tho.

I use my 200GB hdd with fat32 between windows and linux :)

I decided that I will just transfer everything I have over the network so no need to worry about file systems now :) I know the Mini isnt for gaming but are there any games that will work on it? Nothing with uber graphics, just something to pass the time when I am bored!

Not yet, my order tracker says that it is due to be shipped today and delivered by the 29th. I can't wait, especially as I sold my old 20" G5 iMac yesterday and so I am Macless at the moment. :(

Mine will probably arrive in October, looks like my iPod engraving was holding things up - although I thought this was calculated into the projected ship/delivery date :(

Can't they ship them seperately?

Oooh, my D2 account is still active too - but its no good without my Mac... which still hasn't turned up :( I have one more hour to wait to see if it gets delivered, I did pay for next day delivery and the seller said it was going to be delivered today... we shall see, ill keep this thread updated :)

5 days later and I still havent recieved my Mini :( The seller said he posted it on Thursday for delivery on Friday. I did ask for the tracking code on Friday but he didnt get back to me till after 8pm on Friday night and avoided my question asking for the tracking number, and said he would email me on Sunday with an update. He didnt email me yesterday so I sent him an email this morning asking what was up - he replied saying that it had been stuck in Manchester and was on its way and will be with me tomorrow. Again he didnt provide the tracking number so I have sent him an email specifically asking for the tracking number.

So... what do you think? He forgot to send it out on Thursday and is covering his backside and he didnt actually have a tracking number to give me? or is hes trying to scam me?

I managed to get Max Payne running on mine last night. It was 800x600 but it worked fine! And it's running through Rosetta!

I'm guessing things like Rise of Nations and Age of Mythology might work, too. Tried Universal Binary Halo but that still has a bit of slowdown.

My mac still hasnt shipped too :( Both without Mac's.

How much did you pick the Mini up for? did he have a good rating?

I paid £229.50 inc del. for it - Although it does come with Photoshop CS2 and Office 2004.

He has a very good rating (107 Comments, 2 bad) and out of those two bad they are over petty things - one of them being he didnt accept PayPal for very large transactions. He did recieve another good feedback score yesterday which is what makes me think he has just forgot about it and posted it today! I also have his address.

If it dosent turn up tomorrow ill just ask for my cash back, neg him and start a case against him on ebay :)

Well it did turn up today albeit with a few software licensing issues (you know what I mean, I wont go into details but I have contacted the seller)

First impressions... for a 1.25GHz Processor its quite fast! Fair enough OS X takes a bit to load for the first time, but after that its faster than my windows box at opening Firefox :) I havent had a chance to play with it a lot (just over my lunch hour on the repair bench) but I am impressed by such a small machine. I think a 1GB Ram upgrade and a 7200rpm HDD upgrade is in order, also maybe an overclock to 1.42GHz if it is easy enough (anyone tried this?)

Anyway, must get back to work - going to pick up an external HDD enclosure and a USB hub at 5pm :)

And here I am... first post on OcUK from my Mac :)

I only have one or two problems surprisingly! The first one is that I cant seem to get it off the US Keymap, even know the british flag is showing up at the top bar! And for some reason, backslash is "§". And the 2nd problem is in Safari - how do I add a bookmark to my bookmarks toolbar without actually having to visit the site itself and saying "Add bookmark for the current page."?

Cheers,

Craig

The key mapping issue should be able to be solved by opening System Preferences and chosing International, under Formats make sure it is all English and UK stuff then under Input Menu untick everything except British. That might help.

On the Bookmark issue, dunno. :p
