Finally, New job!!!

6 months since I past my final interview and after having undergone just about every medical test in the world (ECG, Cardiac Ultrasound, Cardiac MRI, 24hr BP, 24hr ECG, Eye test, Lung test, Hearing test, Drug test & Exercise ECG) I have at last been given the go ahead for my new job

I start at the college of Air Traffic Control in Bournemouth in April. Yay Me!!!

My advice for when you get to the college. Remain "grey". Don't stand out from the crowd, just keep your head down and work hard and you'll be grand.

When you inevitably visit Swanwick, drop by the Terminal Control room and say hello :D

Have you figured out where you're staying in Bournemouth yet? Westby road ***!

Cheers Scuzi. The courses have changed a bit these days and the Area/Aerodrome split happens before we even start the basic course (I'm on aerodrome so not sure If I'll get a visit to Swanwick).

Yep staying in the Au Levant on Westby road. Had it booked since last year as I was supposed to be on the September course originally but got deferred twice due to the trouble I had getting my medical sorted.

Because it's the only way to get through successfully. In a job like this where confidence is absolutely mandatory, there are a lot of massive egos to contend with whilst training.

Those who often caused a fuss and showed disrespect for the instructors (even the douchebag ones) usually didn't make it through. The training is tough and you need everyone on your side. If they're not you won't make it.

In 3 years or so you'll be glad you went through it!
 
They've assigned you to aerodrome already? Jesus, things have certainly changed!

Pity you'll not get to become a real controller though ;)

They actually gave me the preference and I chose aerodrome. I'm hoping for an approach course too though. And then I'm further hoping for a posting at my local airport (Edinburgh). Very slim chance of it, but you've got to be in it to win it. Probably get Cardiff knowing my luck.
 
I didn't get through when I applied, I applied on a whim, and I now know that I didnt put 100% into the process, as I just couldn't think about leaving home for pretty much my working life (i live in scotland too mate).
However everytime a thread like this pops up i can't help but feel interested lol :)
Maybe in a few years I will look at it again :)

If you want Edinburgh, make it known to everyone from day 1 that you want a posting to Heathrow. You will always get the complete opposite of what you want!

Most likely you taking a large proportion of responsibility over the lives of thousands of people and millions of pounds of assets; all of which real-time :)

Because it's fairly easy to put two planes together if you **** up. I had my first incident last week where I put two planes too close together and is scared the crap out of me. They say your first is your worst and I bloody hope so because I don't want to go through that again.

It's not stressful all the time. There are plenty of quiet times when we're sitting with our feet up and headsets off because there are no flights. Yesterday, I got a 2 hour break to watch the Ireland rugby game and got away 2 hours early. I did a total of 2 and a half hours of work yesterday because it was so quiet.

However when the crap hits the fan, as it often does, you could never pay me enough to do it.
