Finally time to overclock i7 920[Help please]

Arctic Silver 5 but I have had it for years and swear its out of date which is impossible. I followed the websites instruction and felt it was applied pretty well. However mounting the heatsink can be a pain as it needs twisted etc. Think its worth reseating to test

Only other thing I was unsure about was connecting the fans to the correct fanpower slots on the mobo. Bios says CPU Fan = 1620 and rear fan is 1380 so does that sound about right or have I got them connected the wrong way. I ask because one was a 4pin and the other was a 3pin so I obviously connected 3>3 and 4>4.

Currently 15mins at:
195 x 20 - 1.3v 83-76c MAX (Remember this voltage is undervolting to 1.207!

Here is my best stable clock so far. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/189/39ghz19513v.jpg/ 3.9ghz YAY

It failed when I upped the bclk to 200, not sure if it likes that number will find out soon when I go on 21 multi later!

I am now going to up the vcore to 1.35 and try again!

I had a vertical or horizontal line cant remember and it was pretty thin, it looked perfect to myself but will try again. Just read a review and it said the 1 stock fan was good enough as another push/pull didnt make a difference on the 1366 board.

Correct the first fan is the stock antec fan with the adjustable h/m/l speed and then the radiator and then the corsair fan thats inside.

I didn't buy any extra fans just yet and they arent the same so think I should stop the push/pull config I have and just use the corsair solo. According the review push/pull made no difference anyway!

Also realised my screenshot said something about it not recognised, was that a fail on prime?

Still think itts worth doing push/pull then considering they are different fans (Stock antec) (Corsair H-50 one)

Just tried to do 4ghz at 1.3/1.35/1.4vcore and they all failed :'( Time to check out the 21multi!

Reading it as I stress test thanks. In my prime main thread at the top its saying unable to detect some hyperthread logical cpu's. The workers keep going and it doesnt stop so is it stable. I ask because I am on 3.5ghz at 1.25vcore so it should be stable.

Also can you explain why my bios says 22 multiplier with turbo enabled I should get 3.75ghz.
Yet the multiplier is only 21 and I get 3.5ghz?

Its a C0 920 and in the bios overview it states that the multiplier is 22. However When I boot into windows and run prime with cpu-z it reveas that the max multiplier is 21.

I can only go above the 20 multiplier by enabling turbo mode and I also need to enable eist mode otherwise the multi wont move from 20.

So far so good, with turbo on.
21 x 185 @ 3889ghz at 1.25vcore! 10 minute prime95 blend

In bios it states it should be running at 4ghz due to the 22multiplier. Mobo is also up-to-date with latest drivers

Finally failed at: It actually blue screened
21 x 190 3.9ghz 1.25vcore so trying 1.3

The above 3.889ghz is the fastest stable overclock so far and thanks :) Really appreciate the advice your giving me!

21 x 190 3.996ghz 5min stable so far at 1.3vcore :D

What do I do now?
Long test of those 2 in bold above then try and get my ram as close as poss to the reccomended speed/latency timers?

Also what about increasing my:
QPI 1.25 (Left it on what the XMP setting changed it to)
IOH 1.1 (Stock)

IOH Temp 43c
Mobo Ambient 32c
Voltage Regulator temp 49c

That sounds like a good idea to me!
Currently stress testing over night at 1.3v @ 3.996mhz http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/3996mhz13v21multi190bcl.jpg/

I am going to have a look at ordering those fans in the next few days along with thermalpaste and anything else!

Going to experiment with exhaust/intake as my temps creep up to 70c and then get all the way to 87c so I think its poor at dealing with heat when its actually warm.

The higher my temps are the bigger the difference in temperature. 9c is the highest difference I have achieved. Remember this is a C0 and they run hot. With my stock cooler I resat this thing like 5x atleast with a different applications of thermalpaste and it would always run around 80-90c! Hence why I got a H-50 early on but never overclocked!

Downloaded linx and stress testing now, should I use all available memory or just the 700mb or so it puts in by default?

Have been thinking about re-seating the cooler and playing about with intake/exhaust but dont know if its really going to be worth it as I am going to need atleast 1.4vcore over my 1.25 to achieve around 4ghz and dont know if those small changes would give a drastic reduction of 15-20c

I sent the following message to patriot.
Patriot viper series ddr3 pc3-12800 1600mhz 6gb (3x2gb) kit. PT000006-PVT36G1600LLK
Intel i7-920
Intel DX58SO

The ram wont run at its 1600mhz rated speed. I have tried both the XMP profile setting and manual settings and it wont post into windows.
The ram will only work when on automatic settings which reduces the speed to 1081mhz which is not what I paid for.
I have updated the bios and and tried using a higher voltage of 1.65 but it still refuses to work.

They responded with:
Hello,

Based on what you’re describing, we would recommend a replacement under warranty.

To Initiate an RMA or items relating to warranty, please visit this link here and fill out the info:

Currently stable at 40mins+ on linx 0.6.4 at 1.25vcore @ 3.890mhz

Max temp is 81c and going to play about with fans later on today!

Temperature H-50 prime 10min
Intake Antec 76-69
Intake Corsair 78-71
Exhaust Corsair 85-79 Lasted 6 minutes then crashed?
Exhaust Antec Refusing to also post

I had Linx tested for 1hour 20mins and it was stable. Yet now wont even post? 1.25vcore 3.896mhz

Cant even get computer to post at all now :'( Tried taking out battery and taking off jumper/resetting it :'

Made sure to ground myself with case whenever touching the motherboard etc grrr!

Well I am done for now, after messing about for ages and having my system fail to post I have come to the conclusion I dont like LinX and prime was much better to stress test my i7 920.

i7 920 C0 1.3v 2890mhz 185 x 21
Best fan setup was push pull intake using Antec>Rad>Corsair although the corsair only made 3c lower at max temps!

I have a massive headache, anyway my systems running stable and thats all I can be bothered with for now as its time to head out for my cousins 18th birthday! Thanks for helping everyone, no-doubt dig this up when increasing my ram when I can be bothered!

OK I have my akasa vipers and going to be installing them. Didnt have any diamond paste in stock so going to be doing more overclocking if my temps are better.

My computer is 10hours + stable but it refuses to boot when turned off have you guys got any ideas? It has been stable on every game / everyday use but whenever I turn it off and back on it refuses to post. I then have to turn the power off completely let the board powerdown and then I can turn it on but it seems to go back to some sort of default settings as it put my multiplier on 20 from 18 as I was trying 200 x 18 to get my new ram at 1600mhz. It was stable for long enough but then when I shut down and started I did a stress test and blue screened isntantly. I think it was because it had automatically upped my multi to 20 as in bios it said currently I was on a 20 multi

Akasa vipers are working nicely and my system has dropped a few degrees! Shame I cant use more than 2 fans as my aux fan connector doesnt work, fans just refuse to spin on them. Shame I have no more fan connectors available as I dont have any molex cables for the akasa!

Seems to be a common problem on the dx58so boards atleast in the past where overclocks were stable but refused to post when being completely powered down. This is exactly what happens to me but when I then turn the psu off and back on it runs 100% stable and posts fine.

Thinking of going to an older bios to see if this works unless anyone else has a better idea?

Currently on the latest bios!
