Finally time to overclock i7 920[Help please]

Yeah pretty much, with the cooling you have I'd go with 3.8
21x185 I would enable speed step so when you need power it's there but it idles nice too
Think about upgrading those fans and change paste to mx-4 will drop those temps right down

That sounds like a good idea to me!
Currently stress testing over night at 1.3v @ 3.996mhz http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/3996mhz13v21multi190bcl.jpg/

I am going to have a look at ordering those fans in the next few days along with thermalpaste and anything else!

Going to experiment with exhaust/intake as my temps creep up to 70c and then get all the way to 87c so I think its poor at dealing with heat when its actually warm.

that's looking very good apart from those temps, keep in mind though that prime runs your cores at 100% always which never really happens in real world
enable speed step also so it idles on the 12 multi and not the 21 multi...
I would never drag warm air from a case through a rad so when you get your fans I suggest sucking cool air from the back through the rad and exhaust it out the front of the case if possible....need to check your air flow though so your not fighting against any other fans you have

A combo of both prime and linx is best. Sometimes a CPU can survive many runs of linx but then ends up failing a long prime run.

I second this, my overclock often crashes in prime95 but can run stable for a long time in LinX (25-50 passes).

I don't think 20 passes in LinX is enough either.

8 hours of prime95 blend and 1 hour of LinX is what I consider a stable overclock (works in practice, I don't want my PC crashing when watching a movie :/).

Well after an hour my PC crashed at 3.996mhz so it was unstable. I took it down to 3.890mhz keeping the voltage at 1.3 and it was 10+hours stable! Going to try and reduce it to 1.25v today!

Enabling speed step once my overclock is finished :)

Antec 900:
Large back case fan exhausts air
Back fan intakes cold air
Front fans intake cold air

Temps on the cores are not evenly distributed. 80-87c is also pushing it a little, it's not unsafe to run it at these temps but I would try and keep it below 80c when stress testing.

Have you tried reseating the cooler?

The higher my temps are the bigger the difference in temperature. 9c is the highest difference I have achieved. Remember this is a C0 and they run hot. With my stock cooler I resat this thing like 5x atleast with a different applications of thermalpaste and it would always run around 80-90c! Hence why I got a H-50 early on but never overclocked!

Downloaded linx and stress testing now, should I use all available memory or just the 700mb or so it puts in by default?

Have been thinking about re-seating the cooler and playing about with intake/exhaust but dont know if its really going to be worth it as I am going to need atleast 1.4vcore over my 1.25 to achieve around 4ghz and dont know if those small changes would give a drastic reduction of 15-20c

I sent the following message to patriot.
Patriot viper series ddr3 pc3-12800 1600mhz 6gb (3x2gb) kit. PT000006-PVT36G1600LLK
Intel i7-920
Intel DX58SO

The ram wont run at its 1600mhz rated speed. I have tried both the XMP profile setting and manual settings and it wont post into windows.
The ram will only work when on automatic settings which reduces the speed to 1081mhz which is not what I paid for.
I have updated the bios and and tried using a higher voltage of 1.65 but it still refuses to work.

They responded with:
Hello,

Based on what you’re describing, we would recommend a replacement under warranty.

To Initiate an RMA or items relating to warranty, please visit this link here and fill out the info:

Currently stable at 40mins+ on linx 0.6.4 at 1.25vcore @ 3.890mhz

Max temp is 81c and going to play about with fans later on today!

Temperature H-50 prime 10min
Intake Antec 76-69
Intake Corsair 78-71
Exhaust Corsair 85-79 Lasted 6 minutes then crashed?
Exhaust Antec Refusing to also post

I had Linx tested for 1hour 20mins and it was stable. Yet now wont even post? 1.25vcore 3.896mhz

Cant even get computer to post at all now :'( Tried taking out battery and taking off jumper/resetting it :'

Made sure to ground myself with case whenever touching the motherboard etc grrr!

Well I am done for now, after messing about for ages and having my system fail to post I have come to the conclusion I dont like LinX and prime was much better to stress test my i7 920.

i7 920 C0 1.3v 2890mhz 185 x 21
Best fan setup was push pull intake using Antec>Rad>Corsair although the corsair only made 3c lower at max temps!

I have a massive headache, anyway my systems running stable and thats all I can be bothered with for now as its time to head out for my cousins 18th birthday! Thanks for helping everyone, no-doubt dig this up when increasing my ram when I can be bothered!

OK I have my akasa vipers and going to be installing them. Didnt have any diamond paste in stock so going to be doing more overclocking if my temps are better.

My computer is 10hours + stable but it refuses to boot when turned off have you guys got any ideas? It has been stable on every game / everyday use but whenever I turn it off and back on it refuses to post. I then have to turn the power off completely let the board powerdown and then I can turn it on but it seems to go back to some sort of default settings as it put my multiplier on 20 from 18 as I was trying 200 x 18 to get my new ram at 1600mhz. It was stable for long enough but then when I shut down and started I did a stress test and blue screened isntantly. I think it was because it had automatically upped my multi to 20 as in bios it said currently I was on a 20 multi

I'm on 21x191 turbo and HT enabled. Rock stable
Though my voltage is a bit high, but who cares not doing 100% 24/7 anyways.
Check sig for more info

Akasa vipers are working nicely and my system has dropped a few degrees! Shame I cant use more than 2 fans as my aux fan connector doesnt work, fans just refuse to spin on them. Shame I have no more fan connectors available as I dont have any molex cables for the akasa!

Seems to be a common problem on the dx58so boards atleast in the past where overclocks were stable but refused to post when being completely powered down. This is exactly what happens to me but when I then turn the psu off and back on it runs 100% stable and posts fine.

Thinking of going to an older bios to see if this works unless anyone else has a better idea?

Currently on the latest bios!
