infornt of my PC
I am finally down to two choices.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far.

For all round PC use (desktop, internet, web development, DTP and a complete mix of games GTA IV, FSX, various RTS games etc) I am hovering between either an IPS such as the 60hz Dell U2311H or going for 120Hz with the Asus VG236HE.

I don't hard play core FPS games on line. So would 120 hz be applicable to me?
What are the response times on the Dell?
Are 120 hz monitors soley aimed and marketed at FPS games or are there benefits for regular users like me too?

I would go for the Dell, personally.

The main benefit of the 120Hz is felt in high speed games like online First Person Shooters, if you don't plan on playing these much - then one of the main benefits of this type monitor is not going to be realised and you will have still paid £285 for a TN panel.

The other main usage of a 120Hz monitor is 3D gaming - but you need to buy the £120 Nvidia 3D vision kit for this to work - bringing the total price over £400. For £400 you could instead afford a Hazro 27in IPS 2560x1440 monitor - the HZ27WC (which comes out in a few weeks).

Since the Dell will give you better image quality, colour accuracy and viewing angles - then I would certainly go for it over a 120Hz if you won't really be making use of the high refresh rate.

Also, the Dell U2311H is only £222 on OCUK this week - so its a pretty great deal and about £50 cheaper than the ASUS.

That Hazro panel looks really nice. There is also a slightly more feature-laden (including hdmi) HZ27WA version, which also looks good at around £500.

I was thisnking of the Dell UT2311h myself, but a 27inch panel would be amazing.

27" is too big for me to sit only 60cm away from. Do they do a 24" same spec as the 27"?

I just measured it and I sit about 60cm from my Dell 27in - I certainly wouldn't say it's too big, it's one of the many things you quickly get used to and soon you don't want to go back to anything smaller :)

As for a 24in Hazro, I don't think they have released any of this size since they reformed the company - their current product line seems to be aimed at 27-30in displays with IPS panels.

hmm thinking that I may end up going for the Dell at just over £200 and getting a 6950 to go with it.

Sounds like a sensible compromise. Well, let's face it it's hardly a big compromise, as both look to be lovely bits of kit! :)
