Finance / Bank loan?

I should have read the thread properly.

Still £160 odd a month over 3 years for a loan on a swift would make me seriously depressed after just 3 months of ownership.

Especially if I had a perfectly good car that has only cost me a average of £500 in repairs a year.

If you have a big income and money there for when the house needs something else, then I guess there is nothing to worry about. So go for it :)

Buy a Haynes and invest in some good tools, then DIY.

I save a fortune - for example I was quoted £400 for a clutch on my old Rover 600. I did it myself, the parts cost £62 and it took me a day.

Keep the Bora, if you're worried about running costs then I'm screwed in my 15 year old British shed. I budget around £20 a month as an average repair / servicing spend.

Clutch is one of few jobs I just won't do myself - if you've got access to a lift it's ten times easier but otherwise it's too much time and hassle lying on the ground.

Plus you should really be buying the correct clutch tools for the specific car

Ever since changing an e36 gearbox and clutch on a mates driveway (and the e36 is relatively simple to drop the box on!), I vowed never to do any clutch work DIY ever again.

£500.00 worth of repairs a year on a presumably medium to high mileage diesel Bora seems fair to me.

I watched over as my old man changed the gearbox and clutch on a Land Rover Series 2, even that looked difficult.

£44 per month isn't too bad to be honest, I think my carr has averaged £120 per month but I know this will not be a continued thing.

Don't use it as an excuse to move car, if you are actually wanting a new car anyway fair enough .

Changing a clutch is hard enough on a lift, I wouldn't dream of doing it on axle stands...

My apologies, its £44 a week in repairs in the last year.

I don't have massive income, maybe one day!

I'd go for the bank loan.

But your Bora is not going cost to £44 a month every month. It might average out that way so far but it isnt going to constantly need fixing.

My latest potential repair is the well documented PD camshaft wear issue. I need to get this sorted really. The car has done 89k now and has cost me a fortune in the last year and a half!

Are you just so ****** off ATM with your current car that you may go into a loan then after 2 weeks regret it?

If not enjoy your new car

Give it some thought ;)

what the hell have you had done to a Bora that's cost over £2.2k in a year!????

Where are you taking this thing for repairs?

Has he changed it from £44 a month to £44 a week or is my reading today terrible?

Think you need to calculate all your out goings and work out if it is affordable. After you have done this, come back and these lot will help you with how to get the best deal out of finance.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a loan on a car like a swift. I would hate my self after 3 days, never mind 3 years. But that is me.

I meant to put £44 a week.

Ill get invoice prices when I'm home from work but its had

Clutch, flywheel and reconditioning of gearbox.

Unplanned water pump with cambelt for good measure. Auxiliary belt tensioner

Wheel bearings x2

Cv joint and boot. Other side boot.

Main vacuum piping replaced.

Replaced front arms.

That list isn't exhaustive but it's what I've got in the glovebox!

I haven't counted services and brake items as I believe they are classed as consumable items!

Only concern I would have is if I've just spent all of that money I wouldn't want to be getting rid. It's probably got a good few maintenance free years in it now...

This.

Sounds like you've done the big jobs! If there was a time to get rid, it was before you sunk that money into it.

Indulge me here

Pump, belt and tensioner circa 300 theoretically fine for 4-5 years
Bearings 90 quid each, fine for at least a couple of years
CVS joints / repacking can't have been more than 100
Vacuum hoses negligible cost
Front arms what, 100 and again a repair for years.

How much is a clutch /fly in a bora? Suspect that and the box were the biggest costs in there by a mile.

Don't see how its much more than say 1.2-1.5k of work though- the majority of it being work that will sort out aspects of the car for a couple of years to come. It certainly wont e repeated over the term you would pay off the swift

The clutch flywheel and gearbox alone were £1300!

Would you like a loaf of bread with the invoices pictured in them?! ;)
