Finding out the value of a car

A neighbour of mine is selling her car. I am looking to buy it. However I think she is greatly overestimating the value.

What would be the best way to find out how much the car is worth?

The reason I ask is I tried getting the value of the car from doing a price comparison insurance qoute. Compare the market said it is worth £3385 and confused.com say it is worth £4800. As I am sure you are aware that is a vast price difference.

The car in question is

2009 Ford Fiesta Zetec
1242CC
Petrol
5 Door
Manual
Mileage 40000
 
Also run it through we buy any car and add up to about angrand on for that sort of car.

Gut feel £4k is probably about right if it's decent
 
2009 was the changeover from M6.5 to MK7.

If it is a MK7 then £4200 seems about right.

If it is a MK6.5 then its probably worth more like £2800

Just from a quick browse of Autotrader.
 
Don't trust either what car or Parker's valuations btw, they're wild.

Pay for a cap valuation if you can't make your mind upnfrom other sources

Also I've assumed it's a mk7, didn't realise you could get a mk6 that year. If it's the older model its worth significantly less

:confused: What Car have been spot on for every car I have owned or purchased with there valuations.
As others have said though OP should just look on AT and eBay at others for sale to value his car
 
I got an evalutaion from parkers

Franchised Dealer £4,655

Independent Dealer £4,255

Private Good £3,855

Private Poor £3,135

Part Exchange £3,455

What does private good and private poor mean? Does it mean if it is private sale and the car is in very good condition then it is worth £3,855 and if it is a private sale and the car is in poor condition then it is worth £3,125

I also tried webuyanycar.com and they said they would give £4500 for it?

The more I try and find out how much this car is worth the more confused I am getting lol.

What is a cap valuation?

How can I tell if it's a mk7 or mk6?
 
What shape is the fiesta does it have long thin lights at the back or small oval shaped tail lights?
 
When you go to sell a car on autotrader it values it after entering the reg. Not sure which guide it uses, though.
 
Quick question about we buy any car. They said they would pay £4500 for it. That to me seems way too high especially when you have to factor in they need to make profit when they sell it on.

Do places like that offer you a much higher price online to lure you into taking your car to them for an evaluation? I assume if my neighbour took the car to a we buy any car showroom to have it evaluated suddenly it wouldn't be worth £4500?

When you get there they will go round it with a clipboard and note down any scratches (however small), dents, tyre tread depths etc. They will then give you an "adjusted" figure.
 
:p go on Google and type in Fiesta mk6 and then Fiesta mk7 and look at the images. Surely u can recognise which shape her car is! As others have said there's a big difference in value between the two

This was actually reasonably accurate when I sold the fn2

R.e the what car valuations being accurate, it would have had me advertising the car around £1k more than it ended up selling for, abd was around retail asking price.

Cap and autotrader were close iirc. Op cap is or used to be current auction price but it will give you private sale price too and its what trade use
 
Cars are like Houses/Antiques/whatever.

They are ultimately worth whatever somebody is prepared to pay for it, there are no other rules!

If you think it is worth the money, Buy it! If you dont, dont! If there is middle ground haggle!

But if I were you, I wouldn't buy a Car from a neighbour (definitely not from a friend) as a matter of principle. Serious can of worms potential here! :eek:

(Exception! I say to owners of older cars who are facing big repairs, It is worth what it would cost you to replace it!, Not what you could have sold it for. YES it is worth spending £700 doing a head gasket on an old Peugeot as long as the rest of it is in reasonable condition and you are happy to keep it for another 2-3 years)
