Finding out who is making a document read only

Ours always tell you who it is when you open it something like "Filename is locked for editing by username, click to notify or open as read only". Is this not the default setting?
 
Dont mean to be annoying here but on our network we are notified who has a file open whether it be a Word, Excel or Powerpoint document.

Sorry, that's what I meant too. It doesn't matter what type of file it is on our network.

I can ask at work on Monday, but no doubt someone will have come along with answer for you by then.
 
Depends on the server but try using the Computer Management Console to view shares and open files.
