Finding out who is making a document read only

On a microsoft network, is there any way of finding out who has a document open, making it read only?

Ours always tell you who it is when you open it something like "Filename is locked for editing by username, click to notify or open as read only". Is this not the default setting?

For word documents yes. But I mean for all files.

Dont mean to be annoying here but on our network we are notified who has a file open whether it be a Word, Excel or Powerpoint document.

Sorry, that's what I meant too. It doesn't matter what type of file it is on our network.

Depends on the server but try using the Computer Management Console to view shares and open files.
