First computer build and problems...

Hello there.

I just bought all the parts i needed for a new gaming rig, here on overclockers.

I got win 7 installed yesterday, and have run into quite a few problems.
Have gotten quite a few bluescreens randomly, and most of them say "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". Didnt have time to read the other bluescreens before it restarted.

I have already removed one of the rams, since the pc didn't boot with it installed.

Also, when i am trying to run BF BC 2 or COD MW 2, it stopps responding right after startup, sometimes BF just closes it self to desktop.

Here are my speccs.

Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive £124.99
Antec High Current Pro 850W Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £124.99
AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
Corsair Hydro H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/1155/1156/775/AM2/AM3)
Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two (V3) Ultimate Gaming Case (with USB3.0 Support) - Black
MSI 990FXA-GD65 AMD 990 FX (AMD AM3/AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit
Crossfire MSI ATI Radeon HD 6870 OC HAWK 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Deus Ex PC Game
Logitech G110 Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP 12x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black
Western Digital Caviar Blue 320Gb SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache
Logitech S-220 2.1 Speaker System

Also I haven't fitted in my second GPU, since it will be seated very close to the psu, less than an inch. Is it safe to fit it in? I got planty of cooling, and also a fan in the side window blowing directly at the GPU.

Hope someone can help me with all my problems, I just hope i can get it working before BF3 and SWOTR.

And if I have made myself unclear, it might be because im a Norwegian living in Cardiff, so I am still practising my english.

Forgot to mention that i have all ready updated to the latest bios and also the the newest GPU drivers.

Temperature seems fine in idle, havent been able to test under load since it wont let me play any games...

heyy... well done on your first build good job! in regards to the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message you got (I could be wrong) but off the top of my head I think its to do with either bad drivers or bios problems and is usually fixed by reverting back to a last good configuration.

regarding the game, not too sure about that one im afraid but hopefully someone else does for you! but the second gpu should be fine in there just keep an eye on the temps once you put it in for a few hours to make sure its cool.

Damn i remember this error. Only ever used to get it on my AMD systems. I feel sorry for you. It could be a few things.

Im thinking its and issue with RAM. Dont know what though. I remember because i used to get this on my Athlon 64!
Check your mobo booklet and see what type of RAM it allows and how much.

Thanks for replying!

The problems was there before I updated bios and the drivers, and the problems are still here after the updates. So the systems was never really stable or working properly.

Only thing I haven't updated yet is the firmware for the crucial m4, need to get some blank cd's before i can do that.

And also, sometimes it takes ages for the MSI bios logo to show up after startup, maybe that could be some useful info as well.

This is often memory related. Try running the memory at 1.65v and change the memory frequency to 1333MHz for now (SPD setting).

If that works then retry the 1600MHz with 9-9-9-24. If that works then it just needed the additional voltage..

If that doesn't work then try with one 4Gb stick at a time and repeat the process with each in the collection..

If one stick works but another fails you could have a faulty memory stick. Run the stick with memtest86+ over the suspected module.

If they all work then try a single stick in different banks/slots. If one stick works in one slot but not another, you could have a faulty bus (motherboard) or memory controller (CPU).

If that test works then add another 4gb in 8GB in dual channel mode. If that works but fails with 16, it could be the 16 is too much despite the BIOS update :(

Thanks for more answers, feeling like i just wanna throw that damned thing out of the Window, wish i could afford that.

Gonna try switching the stics around, and check the voltage and frequency.

Just checked on the msi site, and the mobo should support up to 32gb of ram.
BUT my memory sticks are not listed in their test support. :(

Well well, gonna keep trying and get back to you when there is progress or more info...

Thanks all for the help so far.

Check the frequency aswell, not just the ram limit.
Also, huddy has hit the ballpoint. Follow his instructions, one stick at a time, test each stick with memtest.

Atleast then you can return that stick and get it replaced.

hey, these things happen! take a deep breath, and try again :-)

Also another off topic question.

My motherboard got a connector for power to the graphics card, and that one is plugged in at the moment. But is that one really necessary since the gpu is getting power from the powersupply already?

Gonna go out now and get some blank cd's for memtest. Hope that will get me closer to a working computer.

It is weird though, cause I have been using the computer all day for browsing and stuff. And it was on all night downloading games from Steam, no problems at all. Seems like it is only when I try to run games or install drivers, the problems occur.

Lol i know! Its ALWAYS with gaming! The good stuff!
Hope your tests run well and you figure this out. Good Luck!

It starts to leak.
IE - over time, you will see that it happens constantly. So tackle this now while you can.

I used memtest on the 3 sticks I got in the computer right now. And if i know how to read the result correct, then it seems like had over 1 500 000 errors...

I guess thats not good?

Here is a picture i took when i tried to run memtest again. Seems like memtest stops at 25:24...

It appears you have a RAM related problem but notice I said "related" because it could be the motherboard or CPU not necessarily the RAM itself.

Try each stick of RAM on it's own in the same slot and run memtest for each..

If only one stick fails, then you have found the culprit faulty RAM.. Mark it with a sticker if you can..and try it again in another slot to be sure..

If all sticks fail in the same bank, then perform the same test in another bank. If they then all pass you have a faulty memory controller.

It's process of elimination. It's time consuming but at least you'll know for sure.

Perform all tests on default settings

I have now run Memtest on all four sticks. Two of them stopped and couldn't complete the test. Two of them passed the test. Then I tried the passing sticks in all the different RAM slots and they still passed. So I assume the problem is only with the two sticks and not with the motherboard or CPU?

^I guess this is good news!

I also fit the other graphics card in, I wasn't able to get the crossfire running as I don't have a crossfire bridge, even though I thought it would be possible to do it without. do you think the lowest graphics card is too close to the power supply? I do have a fan in the side window which blows directly at the graphics cards.

It seems like all my problems are gone for now!
The system is finally stable, and I am very pleased.

All I have to do now is to rma the 2 sticks of ram that was causing the problems, to get my crossfire working and to do some cable management.

I would like to thank you for all the help and advices, so much better than technical support! Thanks a lot!!

Shame about your case, that's quite a poor choice as the basic design 902 must be about 4-5 years old now?

Your PSU will starve the lower card of air so expect high temps. Should have got the Corsair 500R. ;)

EDIT: Why not a 2500K?
