Hey Guys,

As some of you know got the keys to my new place etc, now I have a fire place in the Lounge which is almost original? maybe? I would like to remove the metal to have it restored professsionally.

However anyone know how on earth I get the thing out!! I have looked over and cant seem to find any fixings etc.

To either side of the fireplace woodwork will be a flange screw fitting, this is normally buried in the plaster work.
Use a metal beeper to find it (or just run a blade down the side).

The marble will either be loose or glued on.

Safer to do it in sit, always the risk of it breaking when removing it.
I've dry sandblasted in situ, doorways in room were completely sealed, gets a lovely finish, then it's just a couple coats of Blacklead to seal & protect metal.

EDIT: Look for 'Stovax Black Grate Polish'.

Watch the surround, might be wood or metal, mantelpiece again maybe wood or slate.

I've worked with a guy that restores them and fits them and he always back filled the fire and cemented it all back up..

its a massive job taking these fires out normally..

like others have said, try and restore it in situ.

Ok you guys have made me think Situ is the way to go!

I know some of you have said sandblast, is there any other way to go? this will create havok in the house!

If the mantlepiece is slate, then paint stripper might stain or discolour it.

Is the fire surround wood or metal?

You can get stripper which you trowel on, then which when it's had the recommended time you just peel it off, might need two applications if thick paint.

Metal fire back, a brass wire brush on a grinder, but you get a better finish sandblasting plus it's better for getting into the finer detail.

The surround appears to be wood, so im guessing a fine wet and dry sand paper?

The actual fire is all metal, any recommendations for a stripper?

Thanks.
