Does anyone have any recommendations for for a fire proof safe, it doesnt need to be very big, just for keeping a handful of documents, some DVD's and other computer related backups from work :)

Put your documents in a sealable bag, make sure it is watertight. Place that in a plastic food box full of water and put it in the freezer.

:)

The cost of making a safe that will withstand more than 60 minutes burning versus the number of fires that do last over 60 minutes doesn't make it viable.
60 minutes is typically fine.

60 mins is fine, you can get them upto 120min rated but they cost more!! As has been said, its plenty unless its stored somewhere no fire crews can get to!

I'll take a look at Phoenix safes, thanks.

Why spend the money on a fire resistant one at all though if chances are it will be destroyed by a fire anyway when you have the documents/data backed up elsewhere? In fact is it really necessary to use a safe to store data backups?

I have one of these
I feel more at ease knowing my important documents/media are safe from fire and water, however if you want a burglar proof safe then look elsewhere

That is something I would suggest rather than a safe, unless you have the secret forumla to coca-cola on those dvds I really don't think you need to worry about theft.

18 years of hard work in the business which i now own, our entire database of customers and everythign associated to rebuild the company from anywhere.....yes, its pretty crucial and would have a value if stolen (even by oppertunistic thief) as the personal data is very useful.

How would the thief break the AES encryption though? If you feel a safe is necessary than by all means buy one, but if you analyse the probabilities you're likely wasting your money.

Carry the backups on you at all times, if they catch fire restoring them will be the least of your worries. :)
