Firefox 3 RC1 out

If you're going as far as to say that something is horrible then you should be able to give at least one point to back it up when asked.

Personally I do prefer Safari on Mac, but I think that the vague look 'n' feel and memory complaints usually directed against Firefox are often exaggerated. It's a fine browser.

The UI was always my main gripe with Firefox, that, and it just never felt like I needed it installed. Thankfully that is sorted in this beta (which I'm testing now)

Also, I used to apply Safari skins from the takebacktheweb site, but it came to a point where I thought "ah, why don't I just use Safari" and I swtiched, with no regrets.

I must say RC3 is very quick, and the new UI is very very tasty, but the font rendering is a little too Windows for my tastes, now that I'm used to Safari, and all the extensions I run on Windows are available as standalone apps or menubar items in OS X.

Like it very much on both Windows and Mac. It's become much snappier, especially on Mac. I'm a big user of extensions, so have always used it - things like having Foxmarks to sync my bookmarks. Glad it's now very usable.

The only reason I've got FF installed at the minute is because I can't log into Hotmail with Safari...

I'll give RC1 a go but it's going to have to blow me away to make me change from Safari.

All I have to say is WOW, I just installed the RC1 of firefox and its a major improvement even over beta 5. I've been having a few issues with safari, for some reason it loves using my CPU a lot when on sites using flash like iPlayer and Youtube.

Going to try this for a few days, may ditch safari for this as it is just as fast when rendering pages.

I'm using release candidate one at the moment it's faster than the betas, still though not as fast as Camino on OS X. Though Mozilla are going in the right direction with Firefox. I personally prefer Camino over Safari. I don't particularly like Firefox on OS X but I keep going back to it because there are some great things about it, StumbleUpon being one of them.

There is hack that allows old add-ons to work with Firefox 3.0

  • Load up Firefox, go to the address bar and type "about:config" (no quotes)
  • Create a new boolean, and set extensions.checkCompatibility to false.

"The fix, which requires a little boolean creativity, great for anyone not afraid of taking risks. The idea is to stop Firefox checking it's version history, allowing defunct extensions to work... [Those who do] get the fix working will have to remove the code from the prefs.js file once the stable Firefox comes out, but will enjoy their [favorite extensions] in the meantime."

Via Slashdot.

Sorry, could have said that earlier, it was suggested in the Windows thread about RC1 too. It does work, but some extensions can cause it to crash - notably Google Toolbar if you use it.

If disabling the check causes you to not get into Firefox, you need to run it in Safe Mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode) to disable all extensions, then turn them on one-by-one to see which breaks it.
