Firefox 8

Maybe it is just me expecting to actually see something different but each version change for a while looks the same as the one it just updated. I imagine there is more going on under the bonnet, so to speak, but the UI appears the same. I noticed no difference in speed etc from version 8 than when I was on 7.01 or when I have tried the nightlies.
Then again I have just noticed that my Dev version of Chrome has just changed from 16 to 17 and that too still seems the same.

Still I do prefer to use FF even if it is just for the great extensions I use that Chrome does not yet seem to enjoy.

they are following the same quick revisions as chrome. 8 should be more memory friendly for starters, and I'm also in the same boat as my favourite extensions (including the ocuk forum one I manage HERE)

For gods sake what is it with this stupid versioning?

Surely if they want to catch IE up then just name it 9 now. Every minor fix is just another massive version number talk about a bizarre way to market your product.

It's not just minor versions, they've speeded up the whole development. It's a reaction to Chrome which is already at 14.something after about 3 years (tops). they are also going to introduce the silent updating like Chrome because a huge number of people are still on 3.6.x.
IE is, and always shall be nothing to do with proper browsers because MS have too much of their own agenda to consider. (well at least in my opinion)

Why people are still moaning over the version numbers beats me.

So Firefox have moved towards a rapid release development cycle, what harm is that causing? Their not copying anyone.

"If we want the browser to be the interface for the Internet, we need to make it more like the Internet. That means delivering capabilities when they are ready. That means a rapid release process."

I guess the upcoming silent updater will quiet the people who can't cope with the increasing version numbers.

I can't work out what a rapid release cycle has to do with version numbers. the cycle remains the same whether they increase the version number by 1 or by 0.1, right? it seems to me that the issue here is what people consider to be unnecessary increase in version numbers when the browser is remaining largely the same. It shouldnt matter at all, at the end of the day, but it does make even me wonder why they are bothering to follow google in that approach when seemingly nothing much has changed.
