Firefox 8

I had some issues with that when FF7 was in beta stages, in that, it didn't work all of a sudden! the only thing that did was the about:config additions.

The silent update that they will be doing, will this affect those that have updates disabled?

Spotted this thread and initially thought "hang on what, I'm on 3.6? how did I miss this many versions!"

Thought I'd give it a shot and first impressions are..... Why has EVERYTHING been moved to a different corner of the screen to it used to be? :(
Anyone know of any addons that will let me re-arrange it a bit closer to it used to be.
Things bugging me the most currently are:
  • Tabs above the address bar
  • Refresh button being on the right of the address bar
  • Having to press Alt to get to any of the menus

just upated to 8. Last update to 7 kept freezing on me every so often so hopefully thats sorted out now.

You can move the refresh button to the left of the address after clicking Customize...

IMO, they're just numbers. I'm not sure why people get in a tizz about them. Yes, they may not comply with traditional software development methodology, but it hardly ever makes any difference to the end user! I think a lot of software will eventually end up like Chrome, where the version number doesn't really matter because all updates are completely silent and unintrusive.

The bigger problem with Firefox is the pace of development. You can release a new version every day, but if the product isn't evolving quickly enough, it makes no difference. It's frustrating that they're hyping something like Twitter integration as a new feature (have you ever thought 'I really wish my browser had integrated Twitter search!'?) when basic usability stuff like tab animations seems to take months and months on end to get right.

To me, the Twitter thing smacks of 'Chrome's killing our market share, so let's find a feature that's really easy to develop and makes us look like we're innovating, so we can buy some time to fix the real problems'.

They've not limited themselves or anything in any way. Faster releases are always better. there are 2 additional channels for Firefox anyway, Aurora and BETA and both are very stable and can be used as a main browser (I use Aurora) and it updates itself pretty much every single day.

No you don't! I post this in almost every Firefox thread but nobody seems to pay attention.

Simply add a new boolean entry with the above for whatever version you're running and job done. I just have several there because I try out various versions of FF regularly and keep the same profile hence the value sticking.

Sadly this doesn't work with Trend Micro's extension. Sure it's enabled but the extension is actually dead. It doesn't interact with the program.

Does anybody know how to stop downloads timing out? It has been happening since 7 and now on 8 it is still happening. Doesn't happen in IE. When downloading something the download speed gradually slows down until it hits 0 and then when I try to pause and resume it instantly goes to complete but the file is broken. I've tried using DTA but to no avail.

Have seen no problems like that.

I would put it down to isp interference, although its strange you say it works in IE.

What are you failing to download with FF?

Well this is the most poorly optimised update I've ever witnessed since I applied the update today and got presented with a browser with no addons installed (it didn't even do a compatibility check on the addons that were installed) and I had to close and re-start firefox to allow the installation of addons that were already installed and now more then half of the addons I use have been disabled (including the english dictonary addon which means I have no ability to spell check).

They're disabled because those addons are not compatible yet, just follow any of the above instructions on how to get them working.

But before that why don't you install the en-GB version of Firefox instead of the en-US one.

The update is perfectly fine.

mrk,

How do I make it so that any new tab I create (ctrl + t or ctrl + clicking) appears just to the right of the current tab

The default behaviour puts all new tabs all the way on the right hand side

I had this setup before, but recently formatted for my new SSD :)

ctrl + clicking a link does the behaviour that I want, but I also want all new tabs to appear next to the current tab
