Hi All,

As the title suggests. I was asked to look at a PC today for a mate. She said IE was not loading webpages. It turns out that the web address for Marks and Spencers has lots of images that appear under normal circumstances but on her machine the annoying rotating dots appear where the images should be and nothing else happens. In this example the webpage is populated by sections for clothing etc but at the top is a section of images that can be scrolled through. It is this part of the page that does not load under IE8 or when using the AOL browser. I believe the AOL browser is IE but modded. Firefox 15 on the other hand loads everything without issue. Also I noted today that I cannot go to Windows Update. Firefox can't be used anyway, but IE doesn;t get there full stop. Some webpages, I went to a few random ones, load in part of simply show a header and nothing else. I have tried clearing out AOL and reloading. I have tried resetting IE8. I have made sure Flash player works and that Java is up to date. I am not sure what else to try. No matter how I word it, I don't seem to be able to ask the question on Google. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the proxy settings.
in IE: Cog icon - Internet Options - Connections tab - LAN settings button.
If there is a proxy set, turn it off and try again.

The windows update failure sounds worrying, it could be due to the proxy issue or it could be a sign that there is a serious malware/virus infection on the system.

I have run a full virus scan and immunized with Spybot S&D, then run a full scan. Nothing found at hall. I have now down scannow /sfc nowt reported. I have reset all the security in IE and switched off AV, pop up blockers etc, and still it fails, except with Firefox. Another fault that has come to light now is that she can only print "outside" of AOL software.

An example of what happens can be found by going to www.marksandspencer.com When you do you will have three part slideshow style ad at the top. Six woman in a line etc. This does not load in IE8 or the AOL version of the same. IN FF or CHrome straight in. It used to work of course. I have updated flash player, air etc but nada.

Anyone got the answer to this one?

Thanks

Have you checked the proxy settings in IE?

Also, Rather than running spybot which is outclassed now try either combofix or malwarebytes.

You could run both for good measure.

OK thank you. Tell me, why would the proxy settings affect the way a webpage would load?

Yet another by product of whatever the issue is has just come to light. Outside of AOL printing is possible, within AOL, i.e. from the web or email, printing is not possible.

What do you reckon?

Thank you

Spyware sometimes changes the default settings to something malicious. So basically everytime you try and visit a page, IE gets routed through a malicious proxy.
