Firefox perf is decreasing with every update

i have ff and chrome installed
some sites just seem to work better with one browser but i have found that ff doeas eat a lot of sys resorces compaired to chrome

^You can manually delete old FF profiles very quickly and easily without having to installed 3rd party apps :p

Installed on an SSD? Mine is on an old Samsung 830 series and runs just fine. Some websites with masses of youtube embedded videos such as forum threads will slow down initial load as it caches but after a few seconds it's back to normal.

I cannot use Chrome simply because most of the extensions I use are not available on Chrome and it's not as nice to use either.

Yep but I use it more then for just that  ,do a proper clean ;) .

I find FF performs better stability wise with hardware acceleration disabled so that is one of the first things I do,also probably worth using System Ninja to delete old FF profiles via its junk cleaner ,can get it here and it's free https://singularlabs.com/software/system-ninja/

FF35 has been stable for me with all my extensions.

You disable hardware acceleration eh. But surely it's turned on for a reason? It's meant to help perf not hinder it?

Some websites crash with it on,disabled they all load fine.Btw my brother has same issue with different hardware and he is using Win7,I use Win8.1,all point to hardware acceleration enabled being the issue, yes we both have different video card manufacturers as well.

Turn off hardware acceleration

With some graphics card and graphics driver setups, Firefox may crash or have trouble showing text or objects on pages when using hardware acceleration. You can try turning off hardware acceleration to see if it fixes the problem.

Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Options.
Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.

Click the menu button New Fx Menu and then click Exit Close
Start Firefox the way you normally do.

If the problem is no longer happening, then hardware acceleration was likely the cause. You can try updating your graphics drivers to see if that fixes it or simply run without hardware acceleration. Otherwise, your problem is likely related to extensions or themes. Continue with the steps in this article to see if they help.

I used to use Firefox until about 4-5 years ago when it used to hog so much CPU and RAM that more than a couple of tabs caused slowdowns and crashes. Switched to Chrome and had no issues since. Glad to hear that they've taken that problem on board and sorted it

^^ Never had those problems personally - does take up a bit of RAM more than I'd like but I've been running it with 20-25 tabs open for over 5 years without any problems with slowdown or crashing or any problems at all really until the 34.0.5 update.

In terms of RAM and CPU usage I haven't really noticed much difference between FF and Chrome, Chome uses a tad more RAM when I have a few tabs open but that's it.

I had it on 3 PCs back in the day and it was the same on all so I decided enough was enough. Chrome does everything I need and fast so haven't felt the need to try FF again.

I prefer to use portable versions of Firefox and other apps from PortableApps, it's standalone and therefore doesn't interfere with OS as much as the installer version would.
Seems to run fine for me and very rarely get any freezes and youtube always plays 100% fine and none of the issues mentioned above.
I can also have several portable versions to try and also keep older versions all independently of each other, and all clean and isolated. Try it.

Has anyone here tired Waterfox? My Firefox seems fine and the only crashes i get are the bloody Flash Player ones every now and again.

I've tried them all ie Pale Moon,Waterfox ,64 bit versions etc..I keep going back to FF,btw I have had no issues with flash player personally.

If it helps the Firefox flash player stuttering issue seems to be HPET in the bios, Windows 8 uses the HPET and one of the side effects is flash gets a bit jumpy. As the sync rate is slightly out when playing videos, it then frameskips every now and again to catch up.

Disable HPET and give it a try :)

Posted a bit back:

Noticed it too, tried Waterfox to see if that helps but it seems to use a lot more RAM with hardly any performance increase.

That was with a fresh profile as well on version 34.

Testing aroud a bit more Firefox only seems to crash for me if I leave a Flash content open for a tad too long... Doesn't help if I'm watching Twitch :p.

I fear, with the cash vacuum that is going to slowly become more and more apparent from the partnership with Google having disappeared Mozilla and Firefox are in trouble.

Win 10's Project Spartan looks interesting and I can imagine quite a few people heading to that as they did with Chrome when it was the new kid on the block.

Mozilla and Firefox are not innovating fast enough. Firefox is still missing two massive features. 64bit version and multi threaded support. I think (although could be wrong) all the other major browsers have this already!

If you're using Adblock+ in Firefox, try using Bluehell firewall instead. Memory usage will drop dramatically.

Chrome has been absolutely flawless for me in the last year or two (early versions weren't quite as good) - and I'm hardly running up-to-date rigs: a 4 year old MacBook and 6 year old desktop.

I tend to keep Firefox around for development stuff as it has better plugins, and a clean (no plugins) copy of Chrome for "just browsing"
