Firefox Slowdown

Recently I've been having a really annoying issue with firefox. After I have it open for a few minutes, it becomes really slow and unresponsive. Links take ages to open, typing like this is slow to register and stuff like the search box on this site take about five seconds to open. It starts to use 50% of my CPU as well. It's really annoying the hell out of me. I tried following the instructions on this page to fix it, but I've still got the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Nuke your profile and start again (importing bookmarks where necessary)?

Mine keeps crashing aswell, would that be a problem solved by nuking the profile?

It's worth trying that and safe mode (Firefox, not Windows).

I usually find that clearing out private data and download manager history helps a lot with slow FF performance

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of deleting my profile, but I wasn't sure about my extensions. Will they all be deleted if I do this? I've got a good few (Gmail Notifier, IE Tab, Fasterfox, DownThemAll, Adblock Plus, Filterset G Updater, StumbleUpon, Customize Google, OcUK forum menu, TabBrowser Preferences) so it'd be a bit of a pain to have to download and install them all again.
