Firefox spellcheck doesn't work

I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy, and for some reason the spellchecking in firefox doesn't work. I get the red underline thing, but the right-click options simply has a check box for "spell check this field" and a selection of languages - no suggestions or anything useful.

Any ideas why?

Don't you need to highlight a word for it to give suggestions?

No, certainly not on windows.

Right-clicking a word without it highlighted also seems to bring up the suggestions in 2.0.0.8 on Fedora here, does it actually say 'no suggestions' with an 'Add to dictionary' option too?

Quick google and about:config check suggests that the default is only to spell check in text areas (like the Quick Reply field here), but not in input boxes - does that tally with what you're seeing?

Try running Firefox with no addons (If you have any), or in a new profile.

I'm seeing this in textareas - not tried it in input boxes. I'll have a go without a profile tonight when I'm back at home.

Fine for me on Ubuntu 7.10

I didn't even install any plug ins, it just works (TM)
