if you use a router with firewall built in do you still need to use a software based firewall like McAfee

I do.
I also have McAfee Firewall Plus and it is useful having it enabled as it offers protection if malware phones home so to speak.

Hardware firewalls are better than the software based ones, so technically no your dont, but it never hurts to use one anyways.
