I've asked this a couple of times in other threads, but never really had a response.... What firewall would people recommend for Vista x64?

Is Vista's own FW good enough to go it alone, or would you use another? Would you use em both?? :D

IMHO:

If your using a good Hardware Firewall/ router, then most times the vista firewall is all you need. the vista one is dam good. With a good Av like Nod32
ya pretty much set. and windows defender your pretty much done.

That said I dont think many 3rd party FW out there work with 64, maybe avast ( i think) cant think of anymore.

I'm gonna sound really stupid now (again!).... I've no idea if my Router has a built in firewall!?!?! How would i check that?

I'm planning on getting NOD32 this week, so i'll see how i get on..

Cheers

If you have a router that will be all you need :) otherwise yes the Windows Firewall is also perfectly fine regardless of what some haters would have you believe.

I myself have migrated a 6-7 device home lan from Windows firewall to just the router firewall and have had absolutely zero issues with either in the ~7 years it's been running.

NOD32 is good. And what router? Let us know and I'll look it up for you. :)

I doubt it has one, it's from my isp (read 'cheap') lol! It's an Actiontec DSL Gateway.

As you can probably tell, i know absolutely nothing about Routers... :o

That's good to know. I think the Internet is making us all a tad paranoid to be honest. :D

Thanks guy's. ;)

Just educate your users, common sense is the best buddy to a single firewall :p you cannot go wrong if both are used efficiently !

In addition, with our NAT Firewall, you can feel secure that your communications are protected.

Looks like a hardware firewall to me. :)

Its probably on by default. However you should be able to access the router setup by going to 192.168.0.1 in your browser. You may need a username and password to get in.

Once you're in, you'll be able to see all the settings. But tbh it should be on by default as what use is a router + hardware firewall that you have to turn when you get it?

Ah! Yes it is in there, just doesn't mention firewall... Just says NAT.

Thanks again for all the help. ;)
