Firewire 800 slowing things down

I have a Firewire 800 Card reader and when I'm importing the photo's from it to iPhoto it slows my iMac right down and opening windows seems really sluggish and takes a few seconds to respond, I would have thought my Mac would have been fine doing a few things at once. Its the 3Ghz one with 4GB Ram :confused:

What model?

I remember on my old PPC Mac file transfers would really slow down the ability to use the machine.

All sorted just changed the iphoto location to a external hard drive and it fine now.

Perhaps the drive attached via FW is on it's way out?

No, it would have been down to the internal hard drive being hammered by the file transfer.
