Firewire Header Query

Hi

I have a firewire 400 header on my mobo but my mobo doesn't come with an actual firewire port on the rear panel. I need a firewire port, therefore is buying a firewire PCI card the only option? Or is there some sort of firewire 400 bracket/panel available that will fit into an expansion slot in the back of my case with a cable on it that then plugs straight into the header on my motherboard? (hope this makes sense).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stulid

Mobo is Asus P8Z68-V

Thanks for the link.

Is it important to buy a good brand Firewire PCI card? Will it make a difference?

Which PCI slot should I use on the mobo? I'm not using any PCI slots as no discrete cards. Thanks.

I looked at your previous thread, your case is the CM690MKII advanced, this doesnt have firewire at the front panle.

So a expansion card like the above is the only/cheapest solution

Yes made a boo boo there, didn't realise that the firewire header on the mobo was one just for the front panel on case! Thought I could buy a cable to give me firewire port in the rear panel & plug it into header! D'oh!

The firewire header on the mobo will be fine if you buy a cable / backplate to give you a firewire port in the rear panel... Its not just for the front panel, the motherboard won't know the difference!

PCI cards will be fine too, if possible try to get one with a texas instruments chip as firewire can be a bit finicky sometimes.

Thanks for this. I've tried looking for a firewire cable/backplate for the rear panel but can't seem to find one??!! Any suggestions?

Does it make any difference to performance between cable/backplate & PCI card options??

Thanks for the tip of texas instruments chip! In what way finicky?? :)

Just having a look, Just to confirm this is the motherboard your using:

As looking at the manual the board does not have Firewire, unless I am going mad!

Hi. Yes that's the mobo I have. It doesn't have firewire on the rear panel but it does have a firewire 400 header on the mobo! Was wondering if it's possible to buy a firewire 400 backplate with cable that plugs into the header on the mobo? Instead of buying firewire PCI card??

The Pro version of the Asus P8Z68-V has 2 headers but the non pro doesn't seem to have any headers according to the manual, as RJC said.. If yours has a header, then use it!

Looking at the manual there is no FireWire header, I can see 3 USB headers but no FireWire.

I've ordered my mobo from a certain website that states in the spec that the P8Z68-V mobo has 2x firewire 400 headers, however I've just looked at the mobo on the manual on Asus website & you're right, it doesn't have any firewire headers at all! Sorry for the confusion!! Looks as though a firewire PCI card is my only option then! Is it important to buy a good brand firewire PCI card? It's been suggested to get a PCI card with texas instrument chip, is this right? Why is this?

Forgive me for asking but why do you need firewire? If you're going to be springing for a PCI card, would a USB3 card be more useful?

If its something like a firewire audio interface then fair enough but USB3 is looking to be more useful for hard drives!!
