Fireworks

Just to let everyone know, Saturday is the Hindu festival of Diwali, therefore I would expect lots of fireworks to be going off Friday and Saturday night.

I'm only posting this in anticipation of the yearly 'those darkies are letting off fireworks and it's not Bonfire Night yet, how dare they!' posts. :p

My dog goes absolutely mental every year, hes has fits, scratches the floor, hides in the bath and shakes uncontrollably! :(

The best thing to do is really just ignore the dog.IF you start acting up and trying to comfort it, the animal will think something is definitely up.
If you do your daily routine then the dog will be less concerned.

If the dog is as bad as you say then take it to the vet, you can have some prescription chill pills for your dog (and you can take them yourself if you want....:p)

Most of our dogs were fine with fireworks, they were pedigree Spaniels and so it was in their genes to be super excited at the sound of gunfire. They would rush to the window, rush outside into all the bushes to look for pheasants - even although we had never trained them. One dog however didn't really like the fireworks, we normally just tried to force the girl to sit with us in the living room while we watched TV. Sometimes we would groom her. This was enough to take the worst off the effects.

Well it's not one night a year is it. Fireworks around here started Mid September and I suspect they wont stop until the start of December, and then we will have New Years.

Ban fireworks for public sale. Allow organised displays only. Why anyone gets a thrill letting off a firework in their own back yard is bizarre when you can go to an organised display run by professionals.

I don't agree at all. See my ealry post where I agree that better control is needed with some ideas which would limit Chavs ruining the fun.

When I was younger fireworks only got let off on November 5th or the nearest weekend when people were having parties.

Nowadays, you've got chavs running around setting them off at all hours for weeks, not to mention chucking them at people, under cars, in post boxes, phone kiosks etc - of course it's their 'right' to do this, and they have no responsibility whatsoever to the people living in the area..

I'm not against fireworks, I'm against the pointless sale of them to idiots who just buy them to irritate decent people and their families at night

Those who dont mind fireworks blitzing you for 4 weeks running obviously>

a) Have no children or pets so dont care.
b) Deaf.
c) Are the miserable little turds that are setting them off.

A couple of years ago for new years eve a friend got a superb firework called Agincourt, cost about £100 and went off like a battle in the 15th Century :) . It had about 100 mini rockets firing out of it and really was worth the money, great spectacle for the neighbourhood to see.

:D As much as I have grown out of fireworks, I am thinking of getting some for Diwali...think I've left it too late though as I'd rather get them online instead of the toned down supermarket rubbish.

MOAR BARFI PLZ

ah i miss air bombs too :( i wondered where they went (in my teenage years we used to strap them to rockets for added effect, wouldn't do that now though) another cool thing would be firing rockets into the sea, they'd skim over the water then explode just under the surface, this required holding the rocket though...idiotic now i think back to it lol. now that i have my own garden im thinking of having a little display of my own. :)

obviously on the closest saturday to november the 5th.

how much do you guys typically spend on fireworks?

Is this a fireworks thread or a maturity test because I have to say some of you have failed miserably. Fireworks are great but there are too many cons to justify how widely available they are.

They scare the crap out of pets
Every year there are reports of them being used on animals
They are used to terrorise the elderly and vunerable
They are a social disturbance
Improper use causes injuries

I put my hands up that I 'played' with bangers as a kid but never as a means to cause harm or distress. The unfortunate truth is the few have spoilt it for the many but there is no way around. Restrict it to one night a year orban them for public sale altogether.

I love fireworks and have hosted many garden displays and will be very sad to see them go. Unfortunately I don't see much choice.

Well my two dogs are not scared of them....fireworks may well be bannned in the future...but not this year...im off to lidl to get some..bye.

My city must have an anti-chav shield because I live in terrace housing and don't suffer from firework problems.

If your dog is fitting you should take him to the vet. Don't vets give out diazepam and phenobarbital exactly for this kind of situation?

You've been a grade A plonker in this thread. Fireworks are a nuisance with a lot of idiots letting them off night after night - something that should be controlled by the police. Dogs are often terrified by the persistent loud noises that these ridiculous "banging" fireworks make... why on earth would you start drugging your pet because the scum of the population cannot control themselves. The dog is scared, quite rightly so if you don't understand what the noise is. Idiot.

It's a good job you will grow up one day.

Lol Tom just said you were a grumpy git and I probably agree! You're saying "Fireworks go off for months" as if its every night for constant hours which is crap. Maybe a few each night but its hardly Iraq style.

I live on a council estate at the moment and Chav's love their fireworks. I enjoy them too but choose not to use them in the street. Chavs also love motorbikes and ride them up and down the road at night. Do I want motorbikes banned? No. I like my motorbike and like having a firework display at my own house and we have enough things that are banned in the UK already. If you live in a city you have to just put up with being around other people and kids.

I'd agree that there should be a licence for buying fireworks as they have in Northern Ireland as that would take the chav factor out, but outright banning is just a stupid idea

You need a rod licence to go fishing so something simple like that so only over 18s could buy them would be quite effective. Saying that though I live near a university and the 18year old students are just as bad! They actually make more noise than the chavs as they seem to drink most nights and can't just walk home quietly. Do I want the university banned? No. Do I want alcohol banned? No. It's the joys of living in a city which I won't miss though when I move next year.

I for one think fireworks should ONLY be used at professional venues and shows etc. I cannot understand how in this day and age anyone can go into a newsagents and buy for want of a better word. Explosives!

I don't mind them on a couple of nights in the year at organised events. What I hate is that they are going off from November through till January and my dog hates them and scares him.

Sorry, I maybe a kill joy, but I think they shouldnt be sold to members of the public.

Oh, and if you are a Chav or some idiot teenager. Blow yourself up and do us a favour.
