Fireworks

I love fireworks and have hosted many garden displays and will be very sad to see them go. Unfortunately I don't see much choice.

So you've had your fun with them but don't want others growing up to enjoy garden parties like you did in the past, just because a few people cause an annoyance for a month or so a year?

The way people on here are talking it seems like there are hordes of "chavs" running about blowing stuff up and harassing elderly people! Yes some people cause trouble with them but that has been the same for years and years since the "teenager" class was born into society. It's part of city life and there's no way round it.

Tighter regulation of them would solve most of the problems and still allow others who enjoy hosting a party at home to continue to do so.

My point was meant to illustrate that I have no personal qualms with fireworks and that I would be willing to sacrifice something I enjoy in favor of tighter controls due to the extent of the problem (Which I would argue is a little more serious than 'an annoyance'). If tighter regulation could be made to work than of course I would prefer it to an outright ban.

Your point on teenagers being a social construct is noted but I would be hesitant to band 'chavs' and teenagers together. Teenagers came about due to greater freedoms resulting from post war social change, which in turn led to young people wishing to express themselves in a ways that differentiated them from the preceding generation. 'Chavs' on the other hand are the result of an absence of motivation and respect for others, or even themselves, which is often associated with an absence of a stable family structure/social guidance. The latter is a more recent phenomenon hence this current discussion.

Why? It's a selfish and anti-social thing to do - I really hope they ban the fireworks that simply make loud noises. Last year was a nightmare with those going off and waking our 2 year old son up constantly.

"Oooh-ahh" fireworks at least have a purpose.

indeed it is selfish to expect the whole of the country not to celebrate bonfire night just so your kid can get a good nights sleep.

I for one think fireworks should ONLY be used at professional venues and shows etc. I cannot understand how in this day and age anyone can go into a newsagents and buy for want of a better word. Explosives!

I don't mind them on a couple of nights in the year at organised events. What I hate is that they are going off from November through till January and my dog hates them and scares him.

Sorry, I maybe a kill joy, but I think they shouldnt be sold to members of the public.

Oh, and if you are a Chav or some idiot teenager. Blow yourself up and do us a favour.

I'm with this guy!

im not responsible adults should be allowed to buy them, chavs shouldnt ruin it for everyone.

i think the biggest problem is the length of time they are on sale for, maybe they could make it a law so they are only allowed to be sold for 3 days before and a further 3 days after the actual big day.

you wouldnt have to put up with chavs using them for a month or more

kindly read the rest of my posts before jumping to incorrect conclusions. I didn't say that all fireworks are selfish, I'm saying that deliberately going out of your way to get one that's "dead loud, innit" is. You don't need overly loud commercial fireworks to celebrate bonfire night in your backyard.

And as others have said, it's not just on bonfire night, it's for the two weeks either side and a hell of a lot of trouble is caused in a lot of areas by idiots playing with them.

still profesional firework shows are often boring and overpriced you can end up spending a fortune if you goto one and have it spoiled by the people around you.

people should be aloud to have fireworks in the backgarden.

i agree as in my above posts the length of time they are sold for is a huge problem and probably the biggest issue.

i remember when i was a teenager building a bonfire with all the other kids every year , until one year it was nolonger alowed.

no one in my area ever got hurt , we built it with no adult supervision , most of the adults would come out and gather around on the actual day it was lit so it brought the community together , doesnt happen anymore and probably another of the long list of reasons why most people dont know there neighbours anymore.

one more thing spoiled for us all , a lot of us older folk had much more freedom than the people of today and it makes us sad when these freedoms are restricted even further

Funny, I've been to a fair few very good ones that are free (the annual University of Birmingham Vale fireworks display is always a good hoot and the local parish one where I live now was very impressive last year).

And once again, if you bother to read my posts instead of jumping to incorrecy conclusions, I have no problem with people having fireworks in their backyard. I do have a problem with people deliberately going out of their way to get the "loudest bang they can" and by extension anywhere that sells large commercial fireworks or bangers (things that bang and don't light up) to the general public.

Christ, some right boring sods in here.

Ordered my stash from Epic and can't wait for the 2.5hr drive up to Leeds to pick them up next weekend. Got all my PPE (have it through work anyway :D), fireworks order, timings, layout in the garden, stability stakes, and am going to make a 6 tube rocket rack.

O well, someone on UKFR told me where to pick up some proton bombs (now not made etc), and it's about 5mins from my other half down in London.

FUUUUFFFFF................... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM !!!1111

Pictures up in due course :D

Can I come to yours -Ad-? :D

Sure, anywhere within a few miles should be close enough. About 6-7min display with £150 going up in the pre-finale and main finale (2mins total there). And that's Epic prices, so more like £250+ for other stores.

I agree that some people hate fireworks, but then again I hate dogs that bark all the time and children that cry all the time. You don't see campaigns out there to try and ban either of those horrible and stressful all year round menaces ;)

Banning everything really isn't the answer, blowing up awesome pyro in a safe and conrolled manner is :D:D:D

A couple of nights a year. Come on. Whilst I do understand your situation, I feel it's a little unfair given that theres another three hundred and sixty off nights to recover composure.

Anyone else think fireworks are hugely over priced? Massive profit making is being made for what they are.

You need to spend at least £100 to get anything close to a decent show. Otherwise you end up with piddly small fry rockets and 'standard' traffic light fountains, which unless you are below the age of 10 will not impress.

I spent about £80 on fireworks to see in this year. A 50 shot cake box, couple of big rockets, bangers.. all of which were gone in less than 5 minutes. At no point afterwards did I think to myself 'that was worth it, what a good show that was'.

If firework retailers slashed their prices by half I would be more inclined to buy my own, lets be honest it is more fun lighting them yourself!

When I can pay £3 and see a local display which has spent at least £3,000 on fireworks which fills the whole sky for nearly 10minutes.. I know what will be the better/longer display and what I will choose.

http://www.firework-review.org.uk/features/epic_fireworks/epic.htm

Hopefully you can access that.

Essentially a warehouse/retail store. But they have screens up so you can watch videos of their fireworks helping you to make your choice. Rung them a few times and even the ladies manning the phones know their stuff.

Plus their prices are unbeatable, especially on their own products. Stuff like screaming spiders, wild horses, open fire are all in the £25-£30 bracket, but all other retails charge £45. If I were you then get on their site and watch the videos there or on thie youtube site for more video examples. Then give them a call and order because their stuff will sell out very very quickly as we are only a few weeks away.
