[First Build] ATI or nVidia?

Jibber55, probs 1366x768, as for games the most demanding i currently own is ETW, this is seriously pushing my current PC and any other stuff i want is just beyond my current

ok thanks, this is shaking things up a bit :D im more confused than when i started ;)

what is it with intel multi-threading and AMD not anyways?
isn't it to do with the whole multi-tasking vs raw power thing?

Can you back up your original statement with the facts available in this thread? Bet you can't because we don't know enough info yet.

At the end of the day I may not be right but its my opinion and this is a discussion board so you will get a lot of them.

Like I said earlier I would get a 480 or wait for 6 series.

HyperThreading is a technique that uses the spare parts of a CPU pipeline to process other data, so that way nothing is wasted and efficiency is improved. Windows detects this implementation as another set of cores, which is why a quad core Core i7 will show as eight cores in task manager. But because the spare parts of the CPU pipelines can only take so much data, an Intel Core i7 quad core is a long way from being an octo-core.

iirc the performance only increases about 30% at max, and only in some applications.

LeftRight92... to be honest if you are only buying a screen that supports 1366x768 most of these cards at £350 will be overkill.

You'd be better spending £250 and spending another £100 on a better screen that supports 1920xor a very nice screen at 1600x.

I'm not going to suggest you a card, but I thought I'd give you a little insight into the screens :D

so why don't AMD do it?

Just different ways of achieving the same goal. The AMD architecture is very different so I'm not sure it's even possible. Besides which, you can buy an AMD true 6-core CPU for around the same price as any of the Intel i7 series, so presumably they don't think HT is necessary.

And yeah, I wouldn't suggest spending more than £150 on a card if you're only gaming at 1366x768; that resolution requires very little power.

It's SMT ;) and I quote.

AMD is also working on a multi-threading technology of its own to rival Intel's HyperThreading, that exploits Bulldozer's branched integer processing backed by shared floating point design, which AMD believes to be so efficient, that each SMT worker thread can be deemed a core in its own merit

I think my point has been proven when the OP stated he will buying a 1366x768/ 1680x1050 monitor! If you're going to make a suggestion ensure you have all the info to base that suggestion on.
I'm all for discussion but lets try and make sure we are heading in the right direction.
