Hey, I've wanted to try building my own PC for a while now and this Christmas I thought I'd give it a shot!
Currently on my laptop, which is nice as long as you don't push it too hard. But I've decided I want HD and games with mostly high settings on ;)
This is currently what I've got lined up:

Motherboard - Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X
Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz Socket AM3 8MB Cache
Memory - Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit
Graphics Card - ASUS HD 5770 1GB
PSU - OCZ Stealth Xtream 500W PSU
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
BRD - OcUK Brushed Aluminium Blu-Ray ROM Slot Loading Drive

I was thinking I should wait and see what the noise and temps are like before getting a cooler. Also this plus a chassis comes to somewhere in the region of £550 but I still need some money for a monitor, keyboard and speakers. I put a max of £900 so I don't think it should be too hard.

Any suggestions/corrections/advice you guys could give would be really appreciated :)

Thanks for the links Biz, they look pretty good.
Yes it would Jason, burning isn't an issue at this stage. Haven't decided yet whether or not to keep my laptop and use it as a work machine which can burn discs or just sell it if I need the money.
Pageboy, haven't looked yet. Should probably measure the room I've got between my desk and shelves :P

Bump.... jason AJB comment

You'll need another device to burn dvd/cd's

Consider the Phenom II x3 720 as well, a little cheaper and you may be able to unlock the 4th core as well

After market CPU coolers are worth the investment, especially if you are air cooling and overclocking as well... check the cooling threads out
