Hey

In the proccess of building my own PC. I think I know what im doing, but I just want to reassure myself..

Basically I have sata cables going into the back of my hard drive and SSD but it looks as if there is a port to the left of where I'm plugging it in! Do I need to get some more leads or is it fine?

Also another quick question, on my hard drive I have windows installed. Is it a problem if I just reinstall windows on the SSD then grab files from the hard drive while on Windows from the SSD. Then I can reformat my hard drives..

To the left is the SATA power connection from the PSU.

^This.

The connector should look like the one below.

You could use both SATA connectors on a single cable for the HDD and SSD.

I'm not so sure about the second question, but what I'd do is install Windows first on the SSD with the HDD not plugged in. After it's installed, shut down, plug the HDD back in and turn your PC on.

awesome thanks! feel a bit stupid now :D. The connections dont feel very good, a bit flimsy - is this normal?

And you can drag files (MP3s,pictures,videos etc) onto the SSD then wipe the old harddrive to give you a D: drive for storage.

Just to be super clear. The other connections comes from your power supply. This is what powers the drive. The cable you have connected at the moment is simply the data cable which connects to the motherboard.

Make sure you connect the SSD drive to sata port 1 on your motherboard and your other drive to sata 2.

It will be fine to install windows on the ssd. When you have both drives connected and both have windows installed onto them. You can select which you would like to boot into by setting it in the boot device priority in the BIOS. So Make sure after the install, your SSD is the primary boot device. Once in windows on the ssd. Copy over the files from the D: drive (your old hard drive) Then just right click and choose format from within windows. Takes all of 10 seconds.

Hope that's helped.

Yes that helped a lot thanks, also when I save general files on the computer how will i set it by default to save to my hard drive and not the SSD with windows on?

Making the HDD the default file storage? I think it's impossible. What I'd just do is replace the C in the file target with drive letter of the HDD manually.

E.g.

C: = SSD
D: = HDD

C:\Users\Lelouch\Documents ==> D:\Users\Lelouch\Documents

Well if you download a picture for example from google images. You would, right click and save as. Then when the dialogue box appears. Select to store it in the D: drive, which will automatically be assigned to your second hard drive.

It's just the same as saving a file anywhere else. Your mechanical drive will show up as a drive in "computer" under windows 7.

C: Is my SSD's in Raid 0. Without complicating things. The first drive (C:) is my SSD

The rest are my other drives. You just navigate explorer and create folders etc as you would anywhere else on the computer. It really is that easy.

That's really over complicating things.

If you want to be able to click your documents folder in the start menu under Windows 7. You can set up what's known as libraries.

You can choose the default folder it saves to. I personally just drag a shortcut of my storage drive into my dock, start menu or taskbar.
