First Build help please.

I've just completed a build using the 870 version of this (without the G)

ASRock 890GX Extreme3 AMD 890GX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-041-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

with a 5770 and it's a very capable MB. I have it clocked at 3.7Ghz at stock voltage at the moment and it still has room to spare!!! No need for a really costly card like the ASUS Crossfire III :)

Essexraptor: Thanks for the comment. This is definitely another option that I have been looking at today. Although I think I might be leaning toward the GTX470 at the moment and Stulid mentioned something about the 890gx and Nvidia card. Which from what I presumed meant there is an issue.

Can anyone enlighten me about this?

the 790GX, FX and 890GX, FX chipsets are all crossfire capable, something useless with a nvidia card, its a costly feature you won't use.

I think you did a pretty good job for your first spec. I do like the asus crosshair mobos too, even though they are a lil dear. I've seen people opt for the GB mobos and then add a soundcard, seems silly as the crosshairs come with an xfi card.

I like the features of the GB mobos and price but they have a nasty habit of putting the sata ports where they will get blocked by a large gfx card (please note with the mobo stulid spec'd this is only an issue if you xfire).

Now is a funny time to build a system. I think i read that the new ati cards are due to land in october and new cpus are on the horizon as well. I know we cant wait forever as new tech is always coming along but waiting a month and saving a bit more cash wouldnt hurt.

The nvidia 460 or 470 cards are good but you wont be able to run a second card. The price difference between the 5770 and 5830 is so small you may aswell go with the 5830. The 5770 in xfire is equal (sometimes can top) a 5870 so a 5830 should be better still.

What no-one has mentioned yet (stulid knows this as has posted it before) is that the 955 cpu you want can be essentially made into a 965 by upping the multiplier by one. Since these cpus are black editions they are multiplier unlocked.

Good luck with the build, stulids spec is very good btw (choice of gfx is personal preference) if you cant wait. I just think you may have more options if you wait just a short while.

honosuseri: Thanks for the comment. The reason I selected the 955 cpu over the 965 was indeed for the same reason as you have put forward. Thanks for bringing this up though.

I have been planning and ghosting the forums here for a while so most of my choices were informed through many of the posts on here already. I have been umming and arrring about gpu for the last 3 weeks really and I only started considering the GTX400 series this week. Mainly looking at the GTX460. I had mainly spec'd the crosshair III into each of these systems I had planned but the suggestions from Stulid, w1llyg and Essexraptor have prompted me to save money from getting that mobo and using it elsewhere in the system.

I won't be beginning the build for at least a month I reckon. I am so eager to start but I am going to try and hold off until I know what is coming. Which is why I still wonder if the ATI Crossfire option might be the way to go. Either way waiting means. Student Loans + 21st Birthday = SCORE! :)

Thanks for your help highly appreciated.

Your more than welcome. I have not long just built a HTPC for the lounge but my main rig is overdue an overhaul.

I am waiting to see what the 6000 series cards will do to prices. I don't think they will be a major breakthru more of a revision of the 5000 series. It is still tempting to get a 4890 for around £100 but it doesnt do DX11. I'm more inclined to pickup a 5830 when it's "old" tech, then xfire once it's cheaper still further down the road. I currently use two screens and eyefinity is a tempting prospect......nvidia do something similar but this needs SLI.

Look forward to seeing what u come up with in a month or so

If I was to crossfire 5830's in future and add a ssd would I still be looking at a 600 watt or am I looking at more toward 750 or so?

Thanks for help.
