First build is a disaster

No point in feeling embarressed, everyone has to start somewhere...

Only word of advice i'll give is, don't put a standoff in the wrong place, don't want it shorting your motherboard :)
 
hey dont worry about it, i recently forgot to use the standoffs and had to open it all up again when i was runmmaing through the mboard box :o
 
If it's any consolation, I did the same thing when I built my first PC. It was a k6-2 450mhz and it must be coming up for 10 years ago :o.

I read the manual - it didn't mention standoffs. :o

I didn't read the manual until after I'd tried it without the standoffs, I'll admit, but it still didn't mention the damned things. Not in the bit I was looking at, anyway - and they weren't mentioned on the quick-start sheet, or whatever it's called, the one with the pictures and basic guide to putting it together. I suppose this is one of those things you only learn by building a PC of your own.

Eye, you won't do it again.. It's always worth reading up on anything you buy for PC.. ask here or visit the manufacturers website for known issues. There are plenty of on-line references to building PCs.

Even now, after more builds than I can remember, I always make double checks. I check compatibilty, drivers, installations notes etc. If it's a complete re-build, I write a plan of what i'm going to do.. a tick sheet so to speak, and I always read through the mobo manual.
 
I read up on plenty of things, but it seems that I managed to miss the basics. Lesson learned, Admiral, and it won't happen again. :p




Still having trouble getting the screws in, actually, but that's more due to my lack of dexterity than anything else. :o
 
Stupid question, but you are trying to put it in the right slot and not a PCIEx1 slot or something?

Sometimes you need to put really quite hard to get the motherboard seated as the backplate 'pops' into place - and can quite easily look like it's fully in place when it actually needs to be pushed further out.
 
Just take some pics and post man!!!

Loosen the motherboard screws a little and that should help you put the card in :)

Have you bent the backplate for the graphics card now by mistake?

False alarm. :o


I went downstairs right after that post and got the whole thing fixed up. Just a few more wires left to plug in (and to hell with cable tidiness) and then it's the moment of truth. :p
 
make sure your cables arent blocking any fans or anything.

boot it with the case open first so you can check all the fans are spinning.

Right, time for me to power down this old thing (five, maybe 6 years old?) and plug in the new one and see if it works. If you haven't heard from me in a couple of hours, then I'm installing everything onto my new machine. That, or I've killed myself in a fit of dejection...
