Hi,

I've been browsing the the forums for a while and last week I decided to register and ask for some advice on a first build... I'd been inspired that it would be possible to achieve myself (with advice).

However, by Friday my account hadn't been validated by a mod.
Unfortunately, impatience got the better of me so I called sales to doublecheck some parts I was considering were compatable. I was then made an offer for Saturday delivery at no extra charge, so went ahead and placed the following order.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (66I-01939)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail
Abit IP35 Pro XE Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4650 512MB DDR2 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (471846200-9702)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 400w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular Power Supply
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 X 2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX8500D2K2/4G)
Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black (No PSU)
Samsung SH-S223F/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Total cost £460 approx

Having put everything together and upon start up, i've encountered a couple of problems...

The first one is the CPU fan.. it's making an all mighty racket.. doesn't sound healthy at all. sounds like a garden strimmer. :(

Also, I have CMOS checksum Error (see image).

I'm sorry, I'm no techie at all. Hopefully, this is something simple to solve.

What have I done wrong? Hope someone can help. :)

Move the cmos jumper back to its original position.

And it sounds like you have a wire or something plastic caught up in the CPU fan

with the cmos error, first thing to check is problem teh battery on the motherboard. With pc swiched off remove battery from motherboard and leave it out for a couple of minutes then replace it and try again.

If you get same error press F1 to continue and let pc load up. once windows is loaded, shut down and then switch pc back on, and fingers crossed it will boot fine.

If you have same problems again, try booting up with just one ram stick installed, it may be a voltage error with Ram in which case, someone else will have to assist as the voltage settings in the bios for the ram may need changing.

With regards to the cpu fan, the wire that connects fan to motherboard isnt coming into contact with the fan blades, or even any other wire

CMOS error is nothing to do with ram voltages

Look on your motherboard there should be a cluster of three pins with a jumper covering two and one next to it, (make sure it says CMOS near it and not chassis) the move this to the other position (covering middle one and the one that was left uncovered originally)

well this was the solution for someone else who had same problem as the OP, hence my suggestion, maybe I got my term of use in respect of voltages wrong :)

did the unmounting of the VC and DDR's.

values are

CPU 25°C Sys 18°C PWM 22°C

CPU core 1.27V DDR2 1.82V DDR VTT .90V PCIe 1.53V 12V 12.68V 5V 5.09V 3.3V 3.29V

But : by removing one of the mem sticks Geil 1GB PC2 6400 ux I saw voltage 2.1V !!

So changed this in BIOS setup and off we went!

Cannot understand why those sticks worked for 4 months on 1.8V because I'm sure that was the voltage they were on

I'm also surprised that it ran this long without more errors. The problem I see the most with the new high performance memory is it takes 2.1v to run at it's rated speed. Most motherboards default the memory voltage to 1.8v which can be a major headache. I'm just glad you got it fixed. Mike

Thanks guys!

The jumper appeared to be where is should be, but I took it off and put it back on for good measure. It's on the 2 pins according to the manual.

I had checked the fan for an obstruction but didn't notice anything, however, upon closer inspection there was indeed a problem with a wire getting slightly caught on one side. Feeling a bit silly about that to be honest. :o

Not sure if the checksum effor is sorted. Now installing Vista.

Hope this goes well.. Let's see how this will compare to an ancient Mesh with an Athlon 2400.. :)
