Darn! My first build just will not POST.

I (think) I have everything in properly. When I power on my system, the system fans whirl up but the CPU fan does nothing at all. I get nothing on my monitor.

My specs are:

EVGA 680i
6600 Conroe
Geforce 8800GTX
2GB Corsair
Seagate HDD
tagan Dual Engine PSU (800 watt)
X-Fi
Silverstone case
etc

Any obvious or not so obvious suggestions?

EDIT: When I turn the system off, the CPU fan gets a little "jolt" and spins for, like, half a second.

cpu fan plugged into the correct cpu fan header ???? if its in wrong oen pc may snot start as it thinks no cooling.
I'm sure it's in the correct one.

Any obvious things I might have missed?

Something just popped into my head: did you put the little rubber things behind the mothoboard? If the mothorboard is coming into direct contact with the metal case you could be shorting something  My friend did that with his first build, luckily he realised what he'd done and turned it off quick!

Never bother with them myself

My mobo didn't come with said things, nor did the install guide mention them. My case came with metal spacers; I used them.

OK, now my system will not turn on full stop. As soon as I switch the PSU on, the fans whir for only a second, then there are no signs of life.

My Christmas is wasted

I have similar problem since last week no POST, BIOS or anything, all bought brand new.

Got all this hardware sitting on my desk I can't use whilst my mobo is getting RMA'd. I hate bank holidays!! I sympathise with you m8.

I'd probably go ahead with doing a minimal build outside the case, put the mobo on the foam that comes in the mobo box, do a full CMOS clear, use a single stick of RAM, GFX and CPU only.

Motherboards are supposed to make metal to metal contact with the case. That's why the holes have metal around them and why you put a screw through the hole and into a post that is screwed into the case. Those metal bits around the holes are kind of a giveaway, y'know?

As for the OP's problem, as has been said, build with the bare minimum of components out of the case but with the mobo mounted on the motherboard's box. Make sure the RAM is properly inserted, that the graphics card is fully in and that all possible power connectors including to the gpu are in place. Most POST failures are caused by a lack of care in the build.

No I mean like this, the actual back of the mobo could be touching the case:

There's an aux graphics power input on the motherboard. What should be plugged into it? Standard molex, or the molex marked "VGA"? The manual does not appear to say anything on the matter.

Gotcha. But unless the mobo is bent, it really shouldn't touch except where it's designed to but I take your point.

Nice paint skills by the way ;)

Heh yeah my mate cudda had a bent mobo :p Regardless, the lack of spacers almost destoryed his mobo! The OP has used his spacers so yeah, on to the next suggestion!

Aye, the mobo isn't making contact with the case at any point. It's a bit late tonight to try an out of case build, but I'll maybe give it a shot tomorrow. I just want to be able to enjoy my Christmas present.
