hey guys, thought I'd start a topic on peoples first builds as i am currently starting my first proper build. what kind of hardware did you guys use in you're first build and how did you think it went? :)
 
went smoothly but slowly (that's what she said) as I did a lot of homework beforehand so I knew all the theory and technical aspects but was still nervous about bending pins or ESD or just getting something wrong - I don't think there's anything wrong with taking your time and getting it right though. Even now I still take my time and try to do all the steps in the right order
 
decided to go for a super nova X79 mobo, 3820 i7 @ 3.7GHz, 16Gb Geil RAM, Prolimatech Armageddon cooler, HAF X tower, EVGA GTX 660Ti 2Gb and a 1000W PSU for a possible SLI system in the near future.

EDIT: should say a cooler master silent pro 2 1000W PSU

First build was very slow, recommend you recruit the local PC guru to help you, on some build me and my local guru have messed about trying to get onboard graphics working for hours to find a easy to overlook bios setting to switch them from 'off' to 'on' - dohh!
 
my first build went pretty good , did the whole thing in one afternoon ...installed windows7 ..no problemo :).....then a short while after...did one for the wife....also with no problems either :)...and would happily do it again :)
 
Would have personally gone for a lower wattage PSU and Radeon 7850 :)

My first build was 3 years ago which consisted of an Athlon II x2 240, 4gb ddr2 and radeon 4670.

My first major upgrade since then was as of recent, you can find the specs in my sig
 
My first build consisted of an AMD 955be, Gigabyte 785gt mobo and an 8800gt alpha dog edition. Loved that machine.

Took me all night to build though.
 
Was a Cyrix 333 and loads of other gunk I can't remember (seem to remember a problem with no maths co processor or something). Crap processor.
I built an Athlon slot A 750 Thunderbird next and it blew the Cyrix into the proverbial weeds.
This was followed by AMDs until my SanDiego 3700. Then Intel C2Ds moved the goalposts.
Now I want another AMD, I feel AMD is my spiritual home. ;)

But not while they are serving up crap!

My first build was a 386dx, had a whopping 8mb of RAM and a 40mb hard drive! My uncle brought it home and I watched him strip it to pieces, then I put it back together again. Oh how times have changed :)

Haha, takes me back!
I remember we used to have Doom nights round at my mates offices, 4 machines playing Doom together. Everyone used to try and grab the DX100 cos it was head and shoulders the snazziest machine there. The SX33s were the consolation prize...
 
Mine was an Athlyon 64 x2 5200 @2.67GHz with 3GB DDR2 and an 8600GT. it didn't go so well as I was transferring a prebuilt to a new case. the original supplier had glued the components in, so I had to gently pry them all off, which took a while, but it went smoothly. I can't imagine not knowing the front panel and usb headers off by heart now, but it was prettyscary at the time lol . that was a pretty reliable setup otherwise!
 
My first proper build was the one in my sig, but I had torn apart and re-built systems many times prior to building it. It went fine bar a couple of things, firstly I plugged the front USB header into the 1394 header and burned out a chip on the motherboard (the firewire and usb headers are the same colour and I didn't pay enough attention) :( And the PSU clamp bent the PSU slightly, though that was through no fault of my own, there must have been a manufacturing defect on the clamp. Bent or too short etc.

So I recieved my components today:) Ready to get stuck in at the weekend as I'm having to work away from home for a while:/
