You've missed out the name of the second camera ;)

Any particular reason why he's chosen those two? What's his budget? I take it from the first of those he's after a compact?

fixed, his budget is around £80. i suppose these two just stood out to him, they look sleek and stylish :o

sorry about that. So any ideas guys...or do you suggest he gets another camera for that budget

Well of those two and taking into consideration what he's looking to use it for, I'd go for the Hitachi. It's got a larger optical zoom and shoots at a faster rate in burst, which will be useful if he's shooting skating. Saying that, I didn't even know that Hitachi made cameras and I don't know anything about their quality, UI or reliability. Google for some user reviews of both, if you can.

// EDIT // Around that price range (and from the same place he found those), I might be more inclined to go for the Fuji J100. Fuji make nice little cameras in my experience. Good zoom, intermediate burst rates, decent price ...

What I would say is that he should try and find somewhere where he can have a play with them to see which ones he likes best in the flesh and which UI is the best. Some UIs on smaller cameras are tortured!
