Hi,

Well i have found out a few things. She is going to be 18 soon, and she will be wanting to get a car when she passes. Speed isnt that important really, comfort and looks are more of a concern for her. Also a cheaper car to run would be helpful.

Now the budget, £2900 max for car, fuel and insurance.

Edit - It cannot be a Micra or a Peugeot.

You should consider buying her a Kia Magentis V6. They are very reasonably priced, she should be able to get a 51 plate example for her budget.

Of course, it's completely and utterly unsuitable for her but apparently I always recommend the same cars and thus am singlehandedly making the forum boring, so I am recommending alternative vehicles now to make things exciting and dynamic.

For further information, including details of how much the fuel is costing, please provide me with a crystal ball so I can look into the future and see how many miles she'll be doing.

Fuel for how long though? A full tank is all of £30? :p

Besides, be nice to the dealer and he might even give you a full tank ;)

Come on Fox I didn't say it, I would like your opinion on this really. :)

5-6k miles.

6000miles at 30mpg is about £800, lets assume insurance is another £600. This leaves us with £1500 to play with for the car, correct?

If thats the case, she'd still get a Fiesta 1.25, albeit an older one maybe.

Assuming 45mpg (small engine, girlie driving) and 'used a lot' = 10k a year, 222 gallons of fuel for the year. Current fuel price about £4.04 a gallon, that's £896 for a years fuel.

So say £2k for car and insurance then.

Very good fox, made me think "what the hell" then made me chuckle.

I think its worth looking at Nissan Micra's and as others have suggested Fiestas. Might be a older Micra for the price but they seem to be pretty bullet proof, however the looks arnt to everyones taste.

I get the impression from the fact the car, insurance AND fuel must all come from the same budget that you are going to try and run this car for a year without an income?

If I am wrong, ignore me, but if I am right...

Don't do it. Cars are very... random. You'll have to pay another £90 a year for tax. You'll need to pay £30 to MOT it, and thats assuming nothing is wrong with it, could cost anything up to £300-500 especially if its an older car. Then you've got repairs to account for if something goes wrong, and don't forget a full set of DECENT tyres that you'll be safe using will cost you from £160 if it needs tyres.

Can you afford a car?

Yeah working part time, also father is a mechanic, so repairs will be cheaper if not free, budget may vary but thats what is max at the mo, at how old i am etc...

lol

:D

way to go fox

for your next task, you shall recommend some1 a suzuki Jimny :D

in all seriousness though, cars in this class are very similar. You should want to look at :

Renault Clio
Ford Fiesta
Citroen Saxo
vauxhall corsa

but if you can stretch your budget, id seriously look at the skoda Fabia. They can be had for a little over 2 grand. Book price for an early one is 2.5k from a franchised dealer. Haggle a bit and you could probably get a good one for 2.2k leaving £700 for insurance. Its prob not going to be enough, but its worth a look to see what stretching your budget will get you.

Very wise words

I fell into that trap when i got my first car in the late 70's. I'm now in the process of explaining to my daughter thats its not just the cost of the car, its the running costs as well.

i agree the Skoda's nice, but most 18 year old girls i know wouldent want one. How about a VW Polo the 1L may be painfully slow but most girls seem to like them or a for ka?

Or maybe a Vauxhall Tigra, again they seem popular with young women?

For what you've said, go with a Ford Ka. You can pick up a good deal, they're efficient and cheap to run and the insurance is low. They're cute too, girls tend to like them.
I had one a few years ago when i was on a tight budget and it was a little zippy thing, suprised me by doing 90-100 on the motorway without falling to pieces :D

She needs something like a BMW 7 series, or possibly a Mondeo.

Tough luck if she can't park the thing, she needs to learn to drive if that's the case.
