I'm really not clued up on cars very much at all so not too sure what kind of cars I should be looking at for my first car.

I should have passed by the end of this month and I want to spend less than 2k on the car and probably ~1k on insurance. I'm 26 so that might make a little difference on insurance cost at least.

What should I be looking at around those costs?

I'm struggling to get any insurance under £1k, best I've found has been £1074 on a Fiesta 1.25 which is looking good so far.

One thing I've been wondering is regarding insuring the car while I pass?

I've got my test booked for 3rd Feb but if I was to say buy a car this weekend and keep it in the drive until then without driving it, what do you have to do with insurance in that instance?

Is it possible to insure it against break in/theft/vandalism etc though while it's on the drive? I'd rather not take any risks and wake up one morning and it's gone and there's nothing I can do about it.

You can, but I found that TPFT is more expensive than Comprehensive. Have you tried insuring larger engined cars? A focus 2.0 was cheaper for me than a 1.25 fiesta for example. Also try changing where the car is parked, parking it on the street is cheaper than a garage for me as well.

It's going to be on the drive more than likely but I can see what on the road does to the figures.

Quotes for comprehensive with provisional licence are pretty reasonable so I guess I could do that for a month then change to policy with full licence.

I'll check out something with a bigger engine and see what kind of price it comes out at.

+1. Your budget will buy a very nice mk1 Focus 1.6. There's plenty out there, so you should be able to get one will full service history, no rust and a recent cambelt change.

I've seen a few at reasonable prices its just insurance that seems to be more expensive, around £1200ish on the focus. Are there any places I should look for quotes other than the usual comparison sites and direct line?

Run your quotes again, this time adding a names driver to your policy, girlfriend/partner/wife, or a parent.

Thanks for that, I ran the quotes again with my mother and step father on and it came down about £200 then said it was parked on the street rather than the driveway and that knocked another £40 off.

Insurance :confused::D
