What's an ideal first car for a 21 year old female?

As cheap as possible as no doubt it will get dinged. Safety is really the only requirement and nothing ridiculously ugly.

How much is sensible to spend? Would a £1000 car develop a lot of faults and be more trouble than it's worth? It will probably only be kept for a year until she gets road experience etc.

What's the minimum you would spend for trouble free cheap motoring? I realise a lot is down to luck etc, but a ballpark figure would be good.

Clio, Corsa, Polo, Golf, Panda, Focus etc.. all the small cars with cheap insurance. There are about 101 posts exactly the same as this though, prob bes looking in those.
