Hi guys i just recently passed my test and in need of a car. checked ebay, loot and autotrader no luck there all the cars are sold its as if people beat me to every single car i like.

im looking for the following cars:
VW polo or golf - depending on make and model willing to pay up to 4k
Vauxhall corsa - depending on make and model will pay up to £3k
Honda civic - " " " " will pay up to £4.5k
im actualy looking for any car after the year 2001. if any one is selling or knows where i can find good but affordable cars im all ears (eyes).
My budget is £4.5k

Surely all the Polos, Golfs, Civics and Corsas in the entire country haven't been sold!!!

First thing to do is to decide what car you want exactly. Weigh up the pros and cons of each of the models you've considered, and decide on a car. Look through some model specific forums for some buying advice and the common things that go wrong to keep an eye out for.

Then I'd just trawl through Autotrader looking for one. There's a big market for these sorts of cars, and they crop up all the time. If there's nothing within 30 miles of you one day, chances are one or two will have cropped up by the next day.

i still need to make up my mind about the specific car i want. mind you those polo's look sweet. then again the corsas are cheap to run and the civics dont even get me started on how i feel about the civics but they are a bit pricey

Then again if your paying 4500 who gives two hoots about saving £5 on petrol a week compared to a car for 3000!

Pay less money on the car, insure it under your own name so you're not breaking the law and start building up your no claims bonus.

vw polo 1.2 3 cilinder from 02 or onwards, there buillit proof and built extremly well, my gf has had three major shunts in hers ( once in the front and twice hit from behind) and it has stood up really well each time, and amazingly been economical to repair!

As someone who did exactly what you're thinking of doing, just let me say that it was the SINGLE WORST decision I have ever made in my driving career.

Speaking from experience, get your own insurance in your own name, and start building up your NCB. You will get bored of your first car, and want to upgrade, without your own NCB this will be made much harder when you do finally get your own insurance policy.

with my dads insurance all named drivers will get there no claims. i dont know much about insurance but i think that means that i also get my no claims bonus. or am i wrong?

You will probably find that you will not be able to transfer it elsewhere when you want your own policy - tieing you in to that insurer - who will more than likely not be competitive.

Check out Admiral/Elephant, and try adding an older female to the policy as a named driver, it can bring the price down by quite a lot (by adding my mum, it dropped mine from £1000 to £700)

You may get no claims, but it still depends. If you are the main driver of the veichle and it is insured under your dad's name, the insurance company may assume he is the main driver.

If it is infact your car and you are the main driver, it is still technically wrong.

its not illegal to get insured under your fathers name is it? as long as he officially owns the vihecle im sure you can do that.

No its not illegal if he is the main driver. If you are the main driver and don't tell the insurance company this, then it's known as fronting and is illegal.

but how can they tell?
because its mainly up to who drives most right?

Yeah, exactly. Most of the time, its difficult to tell. However, scenario: if you need to make a claim, and upon investigation they find that daddy has a big luxo barge on the drive which is his car, and a modded corsa parked next to it, I think conclusions will be drawn pretty quickly.

Basically mate, this forum goes mental, and rightly so - at anyone who insures a car for their own use through an older family member, its known as "insurance fronting" and may put you into a spot of bother if you ever need to claim on your insurance. It has been known that insurance companies refuse to pay out in the event of a claim if the suspected party is found to be "fronting" a policy.

Plus the fact they wont have to do all that much investigating on a 40/50 year old bloke insuring a corsa/saxo/nova etc and sticking a 17 y/o on.

It will definitely be worth getting your own policy for more reasons than one!
