Bet you're all sick of these threads, but I am getting fed up with bus/cycling/lifts so I am learning to drive but want to have a car to aim towards to motivate me!

I am interested in unusual first cars, don't want a Corsa etc...

Budget should be £1,000 upper limit!

Before fox comes in, I have looked at Mondeos and cannot see anything wrong with them, so unless there are any other major decisions I may try and pick up one of these!

Only issue is, whenever I look at quotes for insurance, even 3rd party is over £3,000! Being new to all of this malarky how do I reduce that? Put the car on parents policy with myself as named driver?

Many thanks in advance!

fiesta 1.25 zetec. Pretty decent effort can be had for about a grand, and in my personal experience TPFT insurance is another grand on top of that, although there are soo many factors involved in that.

I know you said unusual first cars, but you cant go very wrong with a wee fiesta like that to run about in for a couple of years and then get a decent motor with a couple of years NCB.

On the insurance part of your post. Do Pass Plus after you pass your test, that knocked my first cars insurance in half. Anyone else reading this even if you've been driving for a while, i'd still recommend you do it.

My first car was a Peugeot 206 LX, 1.4 or something. Insurance was £750 roughly
Age matters a lot, i was 23 when i passed my test, if you're 17ish then insurance will be ungodly.

Vauxhall Astra's are ok, Group 5 insurance, tend to be quite cheap for what they are.

I would presume that getting a quote of 3k on a deo' means you've got a bad Brummie postcode, so your not going to get a Mondeo- as suggested 1.25 Fiesta is low cc for insurers but solid engine still. PP+ is only accepted by some insurers and I only got a few quid off the actual quote after adding the PP to the costs. Some do accept it though and if its a big enough saving go for it.

Quinn-Direct are a cheap bunch of ****** for young males.

I'd be looking at Fiesta 1.25 Zetecs or a 306 1.9 D Turbo personally.

Cars like these are driven by youngsters for a reason.........because it's the only thing they can get insured on without fronting.

Oh, try Morethan ;)

Yeh, whilst my road is fairly nice the area around isn't!

Thanks for the pass plus comment, that should help a great deal!

Cheers guys <3.

I have a 206 LX 1.1 and they wanted 3k for me on my own, i was 17 at the time. I went on my dads insurance. 2nd Year wanted 2k on my own, 1k with my dad tho. Its a nightmare. Next year with 1 NCB i think they want around 800?

Still A lot for 2 years driving and 1 years NCB.

Almera 1.4 :)

insurance group 5
should be able to get insurance for around £1200 as the main driver 3rd party

And I have found the car pretty muh perfect for a first car, dont see many young people driving them, they're cheap, reliable, fast enough and despite what people say they're not all that boring.

Where on earth do you live??? Inner city London?

Those quotes are crazy. Search around some more... If you hunt enough you will find someone somewhere cheaper. I paid £700 on my own policy for a 1.6 306 LX at 17 with 0NCB, granted that was 4-5 years ago.

I got a quote for around 3k once but that was only as a sorta "what if" situation as I had put that I didn't have a license :p

This was for a 205 (think it was a 1.3) btw.

what mondeos are you trying? the 1.8 seems to be massively cheaper to insure than the 2l, and the LX is the cheapest one of the lot to insure again (well, it was when i was 17)

I live in a town mate, i don't know why they are so high it just is. :/ my dad had like 15 yncb as well. Ive looked all over for cheaper quotes and there the cheapest ive found.

I get quoted around £2300 for my '96 punto :\ and I'm 19 next month :s.
Will probably insure it after christmas.
Insurance for younger drivers is obismal. Its the bad boy chav drivers that naft it all up.
I mean, its a rite joke. I did a little comparison... I put all my details in, age, sex, car etc and it came up to £2300. I did the same again, but this time I said I was a girl... guess what?? £1100!
Utter BS.
