Hey guys

Not been on the forums for a while thought id ask here for some advice had great advice from the computer sections so why not try for car advice

I'm 17 Passed my test on Thursday... NOOB!

Anyway I have about £4k to spend on a car and im wondering what I should be looking at. I've had a look at a Citroen C2 1.1 SX today and I rather much like it... no room in the back Bonus (no giving mates lifts). And Dad's friend works for Toyota so im going looking at a Yaris tonight.

Is there any thing else i should look at? baring in mind of my and age and im a new driver so insurance is going to be high. got quoted £2700 for the Citroen Fully Comp from Direct Line, seems pretty reasonable seen as though 3rd party was only £400 cheaper and I got a £6k Quote from AA.

Thanks in Advance

Si

Can I suggest that you don't spend too much on a first car? If it's only a tiny little thing then you're going to get sick of it eventually and you'll be annoyed that you spent thousands on it and not something costing under a grand. You'll also be annoyed when you (possibly) crash it :D

I'm not sure how little you can pay for a decent Fiesta 1.25 but they're great for first cars

I'd have a Yaris over a C2 any day.

We test drove a C2 a while back and it was the most gutless cars I've ever had the misfortune to drive. I'd steer clear.

I said that to ma dad he suggested I spent more get summat decent... if im going fully comp anyway why not? few of my friends have got like £500 cars and they are falling apart

Bug One - I drove the C2 today and there is nothing to the steering and it feels as if the clutch is'nt connected to anything.

I looked at the fiesta would be able to get one for about £4k but th insurance is about £2500 3rd party because it is 1.25 which is a bit of a joke tbh.

Have you tried a quote on something like a Focus 1.6?

you'd be surprised the focus is one of the cheapest cars to insure....for example the 2l is only an IG8! most 2ls are like 11-12

Also, the focus is a much better car than those you have mentioned thus far.

Just because it's a bigger car doesn't mean the insurance will be sky high. The small saxo/206 type cars get bundled into a high-risk category by some insurers, because of the amount of 17year old drivers who do crash and drive stupidly in the low powered cars.

I have a 1.4 fiesta, and the quote was the same for a 1.6 focus, I chose the fiesta in the end because now I'm at uni my mum drives it more and she likes it, plus it's got more inside it.

Why should I quote on one of them? i rekon it willl be around £6k al give it a whirl now.

It's worth getting a quote on other things though, sometimes you can be suprised what you can insure the a similar price to a supermini. Focii are normally pretty reasonable on unsurance.

If you're keen on a smaller car, the Yaris isn't a bad car. But look at as many cars as you can, rather than pick a couple because 'xx knows somebody that works for xx' etc ;)

Decent little fizzy zetec 1.25 ltr around 2000/1 model should only set you back around £2000, maybe a little more if not bought privatly.

Good little cars, and you wont be arsed if / when you prang it, scratch it, wreck it.

wow that did surprise me got a quote for £3200 third party and £4000 flly comp for a Focus 1.6 Hmm Making me think now... Im looking for a car that no-one my age drives.

Deffo don't want a Saxo main reason being i can't fit in them and its only a 1 star Euro NCAP rating.

Howard were would you suggest I look for insurance? or anyone recommend looking for somewere for insurance for a new/young driver.

It actually puts me off buying a car tempted to renew my bus pass.

Haha that place is a joke aswell because they are the middle men prices are a lot higher... ive never had a quote off there below £3k

Insurance is a kick in the teeth, don't wanna go off topic. Any other cars?

the middle men myth is one spouted by directline to justify their expensive places. I quoted directly with the last insurance company i went with, and the price on moneysupermarket, and the price on their website were the same

you dont seem to be getting many below 3k quotes doing it your way are you ?

i have no problem getting reasonable quotes on there. And thats even if i put in a Group 20 Impreza WRX STI., even if the quotes are in 4 figures :D

I'd also like to counter spending lots of money on your first car, my suggestion is to get a cheap shoebox for at least 6 months, you'll be able to kerb it and scratch it that is natural with first drivers. You're going to feel terrible dropping 4K on a car then denting it while reverse parking or whatever.

Also don't bother going fully comp unless the value of the car is over about 3-4K. If you can afford 4K on insurance you can also afford another 4K for a new car if you stack it :p

Im not paying for the insurance :) I could spend up to about £6k on a car but im not going to... As for scratching and denting it im not too bothered, I have a mate that works at a body shop so i can get stuff like that sorted.

Ive had £2300 for a C2 third party and £2700 fully comp so I can get it down.
