First Car?

Lots of people, especially reasonably low value (Sub £10k) cars.

For a first car, spend a grand on a Fiesta or something similar :)

I thought it was for a 'family member'? Either way, your first car is never 'your sort of car'. Thats the point. It's a first rung on the ladder, it's your gateway to better things. Just like your first house isn't a detatched place with a double garage..

Yeah I agree with what you’re saying and the member above about the fiesta being an ideal first car and maybe spending so much on a first car is a bit silly, can you link to some 1.25 fiestas you are on about as when I look on Google about 3 different shapes come up and am not too sure which one you guys are recommending :)

I would have thought that an older car would be better to have as a first car, spend £1000 to £1500. After a year with a NCB ( If he gets one ) then maybe upgrade to a newer car ( Not necessarily bigger though! )

Older = Less insurance, less money if you crash.

Then an upgrade will seem so much nicer :D

Err.. wow! Your premium must be high!

I live in London so now I don't drive! :)

But I never made a claim on the first one, only the second, and it did not increase it, it merely prevented my NCB going down by 30%. So as of two years ago my insurance was £650 per year.

But I won't be driving a car again; next, I am getting a bike.

I would spend that 3-4k on as new a Fiesta or Focus as you can afford on the basis that the newer the model the better the safety.

Fiestas and Focuses are very good cars for the money. There is a big advantage in buying a mass market brand as the garages find it easy to fix them and parts are competitive. I bet that parts for an Audi A2 would be significantly higher.

Here are two examples but please do your own research as I haven't checked the ads in detail:

Buy a car for 1k max! Get some practice for a year and then move on to something a bit nicer.

I never crashed/bumped my first car but i know a lot of people who did! To spend 3-4k on a decent first motor and then crash it would be heart breaking. And dont forget your premiums would go sky high!

Buy a 1 litre Corsa on an M reg for something in the region of 99p, get one of those 10 month "bonus accelerator" policies, put up with it for 10 months and providing you don't crash the Corsa (into someone else, that is) then sell or scrap it, take out your 4 grand loan and buy something decent with at least a 1.6 in it.

Don't feel pressured into buying a fiesta because we told you. They are ugly girls cars after all. ;)

If I were you I'd be looking for a 1.6 focus. Much better to look at. I would also make sure I didn't prang it.

Add your parents onto your policy and don't over estimate your mileage. Tpft is plenty for a 2k car.
