I've only paid more than £500 for a car once in my life and none of them have been particularly unreliable. Maybe I've been lucky.

You have mechanical know-how though, the family abuse machine has never cost us more than £100. Has always required about £100 of parts at cost right away, and has always been reliable. But this is because all 3 of its users have been able to identify faults then either mend them cheap or sit on them. Had we been an ordinary user, we would have broken down on the road 3 or 4 times, had 1 or 2 serious suspension failures, spent over £1000 on repairs on a couple of the cars, and never bought a FIAT again.
