First car

Stop putting words into my mouth. Nowhere on the history of the internetz have I ever claimed that I'm an excellent driver... I've simply said I didn't crash my first car, shooting down your 'You will crash' theory down in flames.

i know you think you're a good driver.

I did when i was your age. You can tell you think that as well by your comments about "i wont crash" and "im a safe driver" and "im a good driver because i havent picked up bad habits yet" and "experience is over rated, what do you get from driving a crap car (which most new drivers do myself included)"

We were young and thought the way you did once. Then we grew up and got more experienced and thought "what was i thinking!"

Care to link us to these statistics that say more than half new drivers crash their car within the first year? I'm curious because every single time I look up the numbers, the same story is told. Yes the number of drivers to have an accident is disproportionately high (and thus the stupid insurance quotes they have to put with) but none of them ever claim that you are statistically likely to have an accident. The highest percentage I found on my last search was 43% of 17 - 19s crashing their first car. High? Yes, but still, it's not statistically likely to happen until it's 51%.

It depends what you mean by crash. Most of the people I knew at 17/18 who had cars scrapped or dented them at some point. Very few did enough damage to make it worth claiming and very few had new cars.

Although this isn't really on topic, here is another thing that always miffed me. This so called experience you are supposed to rack up before considering a fast car. How exactly would 10 years experience in a 60BHP FWD shopping trolley make you better suited to pilot a 300BHP+ car rather than someone who has only done 2 years in the Shopping trolley? (Not a direct question to you by the way!)

It's more to do with a 30 year old will be a lot more sensible than a 20 year old on average and much less likely to be showing off to their mates or making risky maneuvers.

Regardless, you cannot state that every driver WILL crash (horrifically/into a bumper at 5mph/scraping against a fence/whatever) their first car. A high proportion will compared to drivers who have been driving 10 years or whatever, yes, but not ALL.

meanwhile, back on-topic...

Depends what floats your boat. The Focus will do nicely, 1.6 with a decent spec. 2k will get a nice one. There are other options at that size but they will be more expensive or worse, or even both...

I still stand by my point that those at a test standard will be more aware as to what is going on around them than someone who has been driving for the past 20 years without an accident and thinks that they know it all...
Are you serious? :p

For that budget a mk3 Mondeo Ghia spec imo...
Perhaps BMW 5 or 7 series ?
Merc E clas/ S Class?

Certainly wouldn't want to buy a tiny hatchback with so much money. Get the most comfy/luxurious car you can afford & like the look of imo.

The sort of person who would even CONSIDER a £10k small hatchback is never, ever going to be happy with a £10k S Class and its running costs.

Then spend 5k on a nice luxurious car and keep the other 5k for tax, insurance and running costs ?

Then again, I missed his posts that he was looking at small hatchbacks.
To me it just sounds like such a waste, 10k on a Fiesta :(.

Insurance will be very hard to get at a reasonable price on those cars.

He has 10k ... More then enough to buy a big comfy car & insure it.

Do cars have to be big to be comfy?

OP mentions that he's 19 and that using his dads mondeo isn't cutting it with the ladies. Big and comfy are not the criteria.

No, but I have rarely seen small cars with a lot of options... And small cars tend to have a very uncomfortable ride.

Can't say I've seen a Fietsa that drives well over paved streets, over potholes, etc, has Climate control, heated seats, leather, cuise control, etcetc... Also, how can a small car be comfy for 5 people to sit in ? It's nearly impossible to sit in my mate's dad Astra in the back with 3 people.

I missed that part of the original post and think it is utterly brilliant!

A Mondeo isn't cool to the ladies, but a nearly new Hatchback is? Are women really this shallow?

To be honest unless he's going out with Paris Hilton this is probably a load of rubbish. At Uni I used to turn up in a Mondeo all the time, the girls were happy that:

a) I actually had a car
b) It wasn't a banger (at the time!)
c) It was shiney

Most girls dont care about cars, the ones that will judge you based on it are not worth the time of day anyway. Sometimes I'd turn up in my Dads (then) nearly new BMW 5 Series. Most of them didn't notice the difference. It was a car..

And lol@snowdog, he should stick to the world of 13mpg Volvo S40's.

Here you go. A 10 grand car that will impress the ladies more than any supercar, will be safe, reliable, fun to drive, economical, perform well and should hold its value.

The only people going to be impressed by that are other gay men

Yes, a lot of them are

And the rest of them are like this - depends on your standard of woman ;)

A lot? Seriously? I drive a classic mini, something quite different to the norm for 17 year olds and the only thing you ever get from it is "oh nice car". The fact that it's a car is the important thing.

What has my mpg to work to do with this thread .
As for that mpg, it's not correct, or well, It's 14 ( where on earth did u get 13 from + I mistook google's gallon, it defaults to US gallons ) miles per US gallon...

Not the sort of girl I'd be interested in, or even choose to associate with normally, but I have had comments from girls at work etc along the lines of "boring grandad's car". Funnily enough both girls who said that sort of thing drive black mini convertibles, because they like to "stand out"

You drive an unsafe, rusty old tinbox on wheels.

For the majority of people, the most important criteria of a car they are likely to get a lift in is that it is safe and clean.

You should see my girlfriends face drop whenever I tell her we'll be taking the Baja. :p
