Hi guys

We got our first cat today (sister had to give it up due to new landlord), anyway I am looking for some advice. When the cat sits on your lap its keeps spreading its claws and this is quite sore as its going through my jeans.

So I am looking for advice on how to stop this as I have only ever owned dogs so I am a bit lost on how to 'train' it. :)

Thanks Kevin.

You will never stop them. They live to cause you pain. I always put a cushion or a jumper or something beneath my cats paws so it doesn't get to my skin

Thanks guys :) we are buying it a post it can claw at tomorrow, how long do we need to wait before it can go out doors?

I don't know about that, they will probably need at least a week to get the scent of your house. Also how old is your cat?

Puttiing butter on the bottom of its feet will help it get the taste of your house

wait till its sleepy and then clip just the very tip off the claws, only the white bit and only about 2mm max, don't go anywhere near the pink part.

Well as long as its had all its injections, keep it in for a week tops then let it out. Only so it knows the scent and taste of your house and know you will feed it and look after it. Otherwise it may go look for your sister again

Spreading the claws is both a sign of affection, and it's getting comfortable. Don't get its claws cut as suggested earlier. Each to their own in the end, But i have 2 cats, and they use there claws in 90% of what they do in daily life, So it's a bad move. Especially for cats that venture outside

A scratching post as you said is a definate good buy, as it's the first step in keeping them away from scratching furniture and walls.

Ours does this, but I've not found it that bad through jeans. We wear a pinney if she's on a lap, she knows to wait till it's on. Mostly it's to stop claws from damaging clothes too much but also to stop too much fur being left on clothes. Only when she settles down she sometimes does it on bare arms, you just have to carefully move your arm out the way a bit :)

clip round the head everytime they do it to be honest. cats are clever so they soon stop. cant even remember the last time our cats have done it and they still sit on peoples laps all the time

If your cat is misbehaving then you can grab the loose skin at the scruff of their neck and that will usually stop them, it doesn't hurt them much (if at all) but will discourage them and is what their mother would have done to them as a kitten.

It's perfectly normal behaviour though and shouldn't really hurt you, the cat is just trying to get comfortable.

Your cat is padding, they all do that.

This

personally ours never used a scratching post although every cat is different. My dad in the end left a block of wood leaning against the fence out in the garden and they tended to use this.

I miss our cats :( lost them this year. trying to convince my mum we should get another but she's not budging.
