First Cluster, Need help?

Got to build a 2 node sql cluster. Using a san to store the database but what disks do i need in the servers?

Do i just need a single raid 1 array for OS + Apps or do i need another array aswell for tempdb etc (my sql server knowledge is pretty much no existant :( )

If you're still confused, search for some SQL sizing guides - I assume you're installing SQL 2005?

How many nodes does the Cluster have?
What configuration are they going to be running in? (Active - Active or Active - Passive, etc)
What hardware have you got:

HP DL385's?
Fibre switch?
MSA controllers?

I would strongly suggest that you get some professional help from someone experienced with Clusters - they are a minefield for the inexperienced and MS clusters are notoriously hard to manage.

I prefer Marathon myself, its simpler and better in many respects (although more expensive).

i am getting someone in to build the cluster, but i need to spec and cost it.

While specs are subject to change this could change things by a few k, and make me look a muppet if i get it wrong

I am failry experianced at looking after servers, been looking after 8 servers (including install) for the last 4 years but have never had to cluster

The main issue is that you must understand the cluster technology and methods used before speccing a system.

Its not just a matter of buying some disks.
 
ok got it sorted, one of my suppliers is knolwedgable in this area and fully specced me some hp kit. I confirmed this with another supplier and one of our support companys.

i did look at this quite heavily, then a few weeks ago they said a cluster wasn't nessacery. Now changed there minds so i had just today to get outline costings and this was the main area that was troubling me.
