First computer and Internet options?

Hey guys,

So one of my relatives has acquired a PC. This is the first PC they have owned and I have been setting it up for them.

One of the problems I have had is trying to decide what is best to get them Internet access.

First of all I should note they currently do NOT have a landline and are paying no line rental. As far as I can see there are two main options a dongle or a broadband package. For the dongles I am not sure if these are particularly value for money. But if you guys have had any experience with these I would be happy to hear from you?

With the broadband connection obviously for normal ADSL line rental will have to be paid on top so it may perhaps be worth getting a bundled package including some sort of phone deal.

Finally I am unsure on usage, but like I say it is their first computer and it isn't the newest of things so I don't imagine things like video streaming will be taking place. Also the cheaper the better, I think I may have seen packages around £13 including some sort of phone package. Any suggestions? I'm sure someone has had a similar issues :P

Sorry about the long post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

for a dongle it all depends on how much the usage and where they live ie will it even work etc

for none cabled area's phone line is only option, sometimes its cheaper to get a bungle than phone line only, but then again it depends on what they want really the net for.

for me i;d go with not only the cheapest, but also the one with the shortest contract, as if not used or needed they don't have to pay if for lets say 2 years as some do 6 months, others do a year, but some do 2 years so you need to watch out for that.

use a broadband comparison site and check your / there area

With the Dongles I've used in the past you had to install a 3rd party application to get them working, is it still the same now?

If you're going down the mobile broadband route, check signal coverage first.

Plusnet have a lot of cheap broadband & phone deals.

They usually come bundled with branded software. You might be able to avoid it if you're able to install the driver without the application. Most recent versions of Windows are capable of handling the creation of the mobile connection.

May or may not be but it does provide more flexibility if the 1 month contract product is taken. No line rental is required.

Plusnet Essentials Broadband and calls is a good option, if contract length and line rental requirement aren't an issue.

Check if they're in a wireless broadband area. Some people have wireless broadband direct to their street.

e.g. http://www.mynow.co.uk/

Ones to check are:

Now (Formerly Netvigator)
Kijoma Wireless Broadband
EMNET
Urban Wimax
Orbital / VFast

Samknows can check them all pretty quick.

I get 10mb unlimited, a phone line and sky..For £36.00 a month. If your not in a cable area and will have to pay line rental anyway. I know what id hop for. Sometimes more is everything.

Thanks for the responses.

The exchange doesn't support wireless :(

I have seen a deal for a one year contract with Tesco broadband and phone. Something like £13 and is unlimited usage. Also include evening and weekend calls.

What do you guys think?

Thanks again :)
