Evening Guys,

Looking to purchase my first decent set of headphones.

I have been looking at the fidelio range, X1s and soundmagic hp200s

From what I have read I'm leaning towards the X1's. They seem to be a good all rounder and I rather like the styling. They are also a fair bit cheaper than the hp200s.

I will be using these predominantly for music but also films and occasional gaming.

Are there any other sets I should be looking at in this price range?

Also I have read the cable that comes with the X1s has a high resistance and should be changed, what would be recommended as an alternative?

There are plenty to choose from in the price range you have. To name a few alternatives you could look at the Beyerdynamic Dt770/880/990 (depending on type you want), or the Audio Technica ATH-M50's. Another alternative could be the Sennheiser HD598's.

You should first ask yourself what type you want (open or closed) to narrow down the possibilities. You have selected a few you like so i'd recommend a quick search and have a read through some reviews from different sources, to see if they are for you or not. Hope this is of some use :)

The above are all good suggestions. One thing I'll mention though is that Beyerdynamic's headphones are designed primarily for studio and monitoring use so they have a different sound to Sennheisers etc. as they are designed to produce a very honest sound, different to hi-fi headphones which have a different tone more suited to music listening. That's not to say that the Beyers are a bad choice, they are in fact some of the most popular headphones in the world amongst both studios and music listeners, they just have a "different" sound. This isn't from my own experience btw, this is from reviews and comparisons online.

What about Sennheiser Momentum's (assuming you want closed ear cups), theyre RRP £250 but places do them for about £200. Meant to be very very good for the money (waiting on a pair myself).

I ended up going for the Fidelio X1s in the end. Reviews suggested they were a fair all rounder and for 150 seemed a bargain.

Music sounds fantastic through these although I need to now buy a DAC as I am hearing what must be interference from my laptop on board sound. Getting a taste for quality I can see myself spending more and more into the future!:D Next step, new HiFi!

Watching a blu ray with these was fantastic as well as many reviews suggested, these really do seem to have a wide sound stage.

Can anyone recommend a DAC? I was thinking about going for this;
