Hi all

I wonder if any of you experts out there would be able to give me some advice on a first DSLR for my wife?. So far, it seems the following could be quite good as a starter :-

Nikon D60
Pentax K200D (Does anybody have any experience of this is she seems to quite like the sound of this one as it has a tough body)
Canon 400d

Cheers

friend of mine got the 400d and rates it very highly...and with cash back on canon kit, would be a good choice

THe D60 has been rated quite well from what i have read. THe 400D is what i use and its my first SLR. it is small but punks a punch for the money you pay for it!
If there are any questions on the 400d Many of us here have it so can answer them pretty quickly

The usual suspects are the Canon and Nikon, as the range of lenses is higher for them than the Pentax (not that the Pentax is lacking in lenses, but not as many as the Canon/Nikon) - but it is important that your wife goes into a shop and tries them out.

She could find that she loves the Canon, she could find that she loves the Nikon, but it's important to try them first :)

I thought that it was standard practive to upgrade your own DSLR and give the missus your old one?

:) Well I don't have one to give to her! Shes rather decent at taking Pics on our Canon IXUS750 and once I've got her a new DSLR she is going to take a Digital photography and Photoshop course.

She does not have any hobbies at the moment (I have a few), so I'm more than happy to help her out with a new toy (and I get to play with it abit as well!).

Do other husbands have a few hobbies but their wives don't have any?

Yeah, think I need to take her to a Jessops or simillar for a try out. Aside from the features, I think one of the key things with a DSLR is that it feels 'right' when held in your hand. She likes the sound of the Pentac because it has a weather proof body - dosen't have live view (is that important though?) or a proper recharger though...

DSLR use rechargeable batteries. The charger comes with the camera. You can use normal batteries with the battery grip, but I don't see the point in that really, unless you've forgotten to charge the batteries and happen to have the battery storage "thing" with you to insert the normal batteries.

definitely go into a shop with her and try each out for weight, grip and feel. I dont know anything about the D60. the canon is a decent starter, personally i dont like the wheel locations. and i love my pentax K100D and am glad i chose it over the likes of a canon 350/400D
