First Ever PC Build

yeah tried zooming in just couldn't quite see it well enough to say :(.

depends, how far you likely to move away from the pc :), of the 2 i'd go with standard wireless

anything against wired keyboards/mice ?

I couldn't see it properly either but I could see four 'marks/dots' rather than three, lol :D

The maximum distance I will be away from the computer will be 5m, but 90% of the time I will be right near it, sitting at the desk.

So would you still say standard wireless? What is the (average-ish) range that a standard wireless keyboard would cover?

Nothing really 'against' wireless keyboards/mice, I just like to be able to easily move them around and I like the look of a 'wire-free' desk :D

What would you recommend, as I've only normally gone with Logitech but will be happy to look at other alternatives too.

Thanks for your help :)

Also, fairly urgent question as I am thinking of buying some of these things from LITS tomorrow, would be great if someone could answer this:

I'm sure it is OK, but can someone confirm that there will be NO issues with my RAM getting in the way of the Gelid Tranquillo?

Hope you can help :D

Christ i wish when i built my first pc it was as good as that. :)

edit

I wouldnt go wireless mate unless you have to. novelty of being a bit cleaner wears off quickly when your changing the batteries regularly. I always have tons of problems with wireless and just end up going wired.

Thanks :D

Well, I thought I might as well make it good while I'm doing it initially rather than adding bits to it afterwards.

So I'm going to build it, then I'm not intending on spending any major money on it after that for a long time

Glad you like it :D

EDIT: I understand what you say about the wireless/wired issue. I haven't decided yet about the keyboard/mouse. I might go wired because at the moment I only have a laptop and it has an illuminated keyboard that I use quite a lot, so I sort of want an illuminated one for the desktop too so I think I might end up going for a wired one since the back lighting will kill the batteries on a wireless one sooooo quickly, plus I'm not sure if any wireless illuminated ones exist for reasonable money. :p

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't updated this for a while, been quite busy

I bought near-enough everything from LITS, but I have to say I did get it from a competitor to OcUK due to the price and deals they gave me. I got all the same things as I had on my list, better things (120GB OCZ SSD instead of 64GB Crucial) or equivalents and saved £116 so I had to go to a competitor really.

I got:

- Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30 GHz Sandybridge (Same as what I had on my list)
- Asus P8Z68-VLX (The Asus equivalent to the Gigabyte I had on my list)
- Samsung Spin Point F3 1TB (Same as what I had on my list)
- Gelid Tranquillo (Same as what I had on my list)
- Corsair Vengeance Low Profile, Blue, 8GB (Got this rather than the Kingston Genesis Grey as the man said there is no difference in performance, low profile so won't get in the way of an large CPU coolers, and this matches the colour of my mobo)
- OCZ Agility 3 120GB
- Samsung SH-B123L Blu Ray Drive
- Coolermaster Elite 430

I got an OCZ ZS Series 550W power supply, but only realised this wasn't modular when I got home, :( . So contacted the company and they gave me an RMA number, so I'm going to have it swapped for the Antec TruePower New Modular 550W

They didn't have the gfx card I wanted, so I came home and bought that from OcUK :D I was also quite lucky because just before ordering the refurbished GTX 460 768MB, I spotted a refurbished GTX 460 1024MB for only £9 more, so got that instead :D They only had one in stock ! :)

So I have everything now apart from mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers. I have all these things to test the PC with but they're old wired keyboard/mouse and TV as a monitor. So I need to buy the ones I am actually going to use, if that makes sense :)

Tomorrow my PSU, ESD strap, gfx card, Akasa card reader with bluetooth, 2 x SATA cables, 2.5" - 3.5" adaptor for SSD and 120mm Akasa Apache Black Ultra Silent fan should all arrive. Then I will be ready to build it :D

Quick question, with the case I only got the exact amount of motherboard standoffs (no spares), and two of the ones I have look the same as the rest apart from right at the top they have an 'added part' to them, making them slightly (maybe 1mm or 2mm) higher than all the rest, is there a specific place to put these two higher ones, or will it not make a difference?

:D

I dont think it will make a difference?, btw if you want a 1tb HDD now it will be 90£ and up

OK, I just didn't understand why two were slightly taller than the rest, lol

And luckily the Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB I got from LITS was only £41 incl. VAT :D :D The prices have gone up so much now though

Since I now have all my parts, I was going to start the build now (maybe tomorrow), and build it out of the case, on the motherboard box first with the basic components needed and just test that it all works. Is this a good way to do it? Because I don't really want it all lying around out of the case for ages, should I just build it in the case, with basic components only, then install windows, make sure it all works, then add the GFX card, card reader etc? Does that sound like a better option?

Also what would be the basic components it needs to boot?

-PSU
-Mobo
-Processor
-CPU Cooler
-HDD/SSD
-RAM
-Blu-Ray drive

Don't think I've missed anything out but let me know if I have :D

EDIT: Also, if I do build it out of the case:
1: What do I connect my ESD strap to?
2: If I power it on using a screwdriver to short the connections of the power switch, or even if I build it in the case and power it on properly, and haven't installed windows yet, how do I turn it off ???

Anyone got any ideas?

Shall I just build it in the case with basic components instead of having it on the mobo box then transferring it to the case?

What would you all recommend?

Also, if anyone is able to answer the questions I put in the 'EDIT' above that would be great :D

Thanks in advance :)

Well the PC is built and it works which is good news :D :D :D

I just done it with basic components, so still need to install card reader and gfx card, also needs all the wiring to be tidied up because I just done it quickly to make sure it all works :)

Question:

On my gfx card (GTX 460 1024MB), it has two 6 pin connectors for power. Do both of these need to be plugged in, or just one? I am assuming both?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi,

I wonder if Stulid (or anyone) can answer this for me

I have a GTX 460 1GB GFX card and an Antec True Power New Modular 550W PSU.

As I said above the GTX 460 needs TWO 6-pin connections to the PSU, but coming out of the PSU there is only one.

So when I attach the cable I got inside the PSU box (PCI-E 6 pin at one end, and 8 pin connection for back of PSU at the other end, although there is only actually 6 electrical connections inside it, two are blank) on the back of the PSU do I connect it to 12V4 or 12V3 ??

Both of them say PCI-E / HDD. But which do I use? Is there a difference?

Extra info might help: 12V3 has a blanking plug over two of the holes, but this can be removed

Hope you can help and thanks in advance,

the saying "RTFM" appropriate in this situation? ;)

you should be fine with plugging it into either of the 2 as long as it mentions pci-e but its best to refer to the instruction manual(yes I know its hard but you'll get your answer much faster).

All the manual says is:

If you are going to plug the additional PCI-E cable into the PSU, it should go into the red socket

But both 12V3 and 12V4 are red, so I was just checking to see if there was a difference between the two

Thanks :)

should be fine using either 12v4 means you don't need to take the 'plug' out of 12v3

Yeah it works, well I've connected it all up, the fan on it runs, and the onboard graphics have been disabled so I assume it works. Haven't been able to test it yet as I don't have a monitor with a DVI port, and don't have a mini HDMI to HDMI cable to test it with the TV :)

Right, I had a spare bit of time so I took some pictures and thought I would upload them here.

So, what do you think? Pretty good for a first build?? :p

Also, I am fairly sure everything else is correct but I'm not sure about the heatsink and it's fan. Is it all setup correctly?

The fan in the front is intake, the fan at the rear is exhaust and the fan on the Gelid is blowing AWAY from the heatsink to take the heat away from it, and blow it towards the rear exhaust fan.

Is that right?

Hope you like the pics, let me know your comments :D
