who can recite the first time they got online?

i remember mine.. i loaded up yahoo chat rooms and was chatting to this fella from the states and my dad was like .. ' NO WAI is that a person from america, its a computer robot' LOL

Tried for 3 hours with aol to get connected (56k days) right pain in the ass, then as soon as i got online first thing i did was go to Lycos and search for jokes.

I remember on a stupidly expensive (borrowed!) laptop with a black and white screen (old school!) connecting to something, I think, called Banana internet, and then not knowing how to do a thing :D

I think the first website i ever went onto was Manchester United, well my mate did, as i didnt have a clue what the internet was. lol

It scared me a little ;)

Can't remember what year it was, prob about 98/99

We got an internet connection in the office. Very locked down to start with (you pretty much had to beg for access). Fortunately we got it. That was way back in 1993/4 and the web browser of choice then was NCSA Mosaic (the first popular graphical browser in a form we'd recognise today, and the long-lost father of most browsers we still use today).

Back then it was 95% black on grey text with the odd image thrown in if you were really lucky. Of course, there were the likes of Compuserve and AOL with their proprietary and closed interfaces, and there were newsgroups and email, but the world wide web itself was still in it's infancy.

Oh how things have changed in the last 10 years. :)

Edit - got my dates wrong, it was somewhat earlier than 1997 - I started with that company in 1992 so 1993/4 makes more sense. :)

I was pretty young at the time (around 1995ish) and i went into a chat room, people asked where i was from and i replied "wigan" we all ended up very confused when they started asking which state that was in, and then it took me 10 minutes or so to convince the american's that i was an actual english guy (weren't many of us around those days apparently.)

'96 or '97 we got it in at home via Virgin.net. I must have been about 13 years old. First thing I did (I think) was go into the virgin chatrooms. We were paying about next to nothing if I remember correctly and had a second line in just for the net.

Oh yes, I had one of those Compuserve addresses, for a while (minor pedantry, but the correct email format was 12345.6789@compuserve.com). I still have a Compuserve bag, and a few Compuserve mousemats, somewhere. I think I recently threw out the US Robotics 14.4K modem I had back then. :)

I was elite i had a diamond 56k pro modem! those were the big daddies that could get you a ping of less than 150 on unreal tournament as opposed to those crappy 'winmodems' a lot of computers came built with

I remember the days of an ISA 28.8K modem and the pains I had to get it to work properly. I miss the days of the modem talk.
